Emergency Qantas landing?

If he came to Oz as an exchange pilot that would make him a non-Aussie Top Gun surely?

I suppose that depends how long he stayed (he's still here), whether he was neutralized, naturalized and whether he actually joined the RAAF.

... He came to Australia as an exchange pilot ... and flew the Mirage in the Australian airforce. So he's a highly trained pilot. ...
I have come across the Mirage being described as a "brick with wings"; tough to fly so that's a innate compliment to the pilot's abilities.

With a touchdown speed of around 180Kts and no flaps, slats or slots probably gives a clue.

For the record I was not criticising his skill in any way - he did a fantastic job.

From /.

The real reason:
"It looks like you are trying to fly a commercial airliner. Would you like me to:
a) Make an announcement to passengers
b) Call the stewardess for some more coffee
c) Compensate for the incredibly high angle of attack"

:)

Whoosh ...

That's the sound of that one going straight past me ..:confused:

No comprendo :?::?::?:

Yes ..ughh ... I always disable that feature at first opportunity! So, certainly not top of the list of possibilities for me ...:-|

Wot? No " Don't show me this tip again"?

Not wanting to drag this topic back to where it's meant to be, but I'm still waiting bravoecho :D

Well I wouldn't want to disappoint our illustrious moderator would I :D.

He is a former tomcat driver with a very impressive CV. Newspaper articles about the mirage (otherwise known as the aluminium death tube) is correct though I don't want to say much more to:

a. protect his privacy
b. I think both of us would get our buts kicked if I let out information ahead of any ATSB announcements.

Needless to say it is an amazing story and there is a lot more to come. If there are any gaps that I can fill in I will oblige.

Ah so born a Yank? So not "really" an Aussie hero just like it is pointed out to me that Kevin Pietersen isn't really an "English" cricketer ;)

Mr Pietersen may not be a real "English Cricketer", but on many occasions (too many if you ask Aussies) he certainly has been an "English Hero". Similarly I don't see a problem with identifying the QF72 captain as an "Aussie Hero".

Whilst the "Aussie Top Gun Hero" story is a nice story, we all know (or more accurately - assume) that any other QF pilot would have handled it beautifully as well. Could rattle on forever and ever about how QF "pilots are trained for this" etc. but no need. :P

Absolutely your right and I respect that. Perhaps over a beer you can explain some of the technicalities of the onboard computer systems...

I hope the same could be said of any pilot working for a major airline.

Generalisations generally don't help, but personally speaking I have less confidence in '3rd world airlines' pilot ability. This is likely due to recent disasters such as Indonisia where the pilot was blamed...(rightly or wrongly). And call me rediculous but that's just the impression I get. *shrug*

Well I did "clarify" my generalisation with the word "major". And yes I know there have been some incidents that are directly attributed to pilot error or airline systemic failures, involving airlines that I would generally consider included in the "major" category, such as SQ006 at TPE and SQ286 at AKL.

Actually I meant my own generalisation :P
