Earthquake rocks Christchurch in New Zealand | News.com.au

A STRONG earthquake has caused widespread damage and power cuts in New Zealand's second-largest city.
The quake's magnitude was revised downwards slightly from an initial estimate of 7.4 to 7.2, according to the US Geological Survey.

Not good news for NZers or those travelling to Christchurch. My parents will be heading there in 2 weeks, so we are closely watching the developments.

Are there any AFFers in Christchurch?

I just phoned my sister who lives with her family in Cashmere Hills, Christchurch. Their house was built to be earthquake proof so is structurally sound but lots of "stuff" fell off shelves and pictures off walls.

No power or water and the mobile towers only have limited battery power.

Her daughter was due to fly bak to uni in Palmerston North today but they have been advised not to go to the airport.

She is only getting news via a battery radio so I was able to give her a bit more info via the internet!!!

I can report it was felt as far away as Queenstown, though am told it was around 4 in the morning so I didn't wake up for it :p

I'm told guests in the hotels felt it though.

Coverage for mobiles is fine though broadband services are down so at least I know why now.

I was in CHC for the quake - was staying in the Ibis in town. It was a very rough ride with a lot of big aftershocks. Worst damage seems to be to water supply - have since evacuated town to Henmer Springs :)

CHC Airport was closed until 2pm for runway damage inspection.

Well good to see no one actually died of the earthquake, and only 2 actually had to go to hospital. Hope for speedy cleanup and recovery and no more e/qs.

Returned to SYD this morning - light loads considering the events of the weekend (perhaps NZ's Choose Your Seat is making in-roads on DJ's market?).

CHC CBD was a complete shambles when we returned yesterday afternoon, we had planned to pick up our last night in the Ibis for the early flight today. We had to be driven by shuttle from the outskirts to the hotel through the cordons. On arrival were told our booking had been cancelled but we could still stay in the hotel or go elsewhere

Ended up taking a Spa Suite in a small, new motel in Merivale - much nicer than Ibis!!

I'm heading there on Wednesday 8th Sept, got the camera battery fully charged.

Should be interesting.

Passed through the outskirts today on DJ "flight" DJ8003. Didn’t see too much damage, but know it was fairly localised to a few areas. About the most we saw was a corner of a house/roof sagging dangerously.

Felt a small aftershock, though missed a big one apparently, shortly before we arrived at the airport.

On the late news this evening there have been a couple of serious after shocks.

Not good news at all.

Chch Airport this morning was closed for a while after they found new cracks in the walls:(

"Christchurch Airport was closed for over two hours this morning after cracks appeared in the walls.
Airport spokesman Gareth Owen said the airport usually opens at about 5am but with the aftershocks overnight, engineers were called in to check the safety of the building.
Mr Owen said it was deemed safe and was opened at 7.30am."

Last nights aftershocks were
"The aftershocks included one with a magnitude of 5.2 shortly before 11.30pm, one of 5.4 soon after, and another of 5.4 around 3.30am today. Another 3.6 on the Richter scale hit at 8.14am and was followed 10 minutes later by a quake measuring 3.6"

Which to say the least are still decent shocks for NZ, having slept or not through a couple of them.
In terms of tourists and what I have from the locals is the inner city, New Brighton and some rural, coastal and near river area's are still pretty messed up. They will get back to a sort of normal in a couple of weeks :p but there will still be area's of no go.

Check with your hotels to see if they are still open, suffered damage or restricted access (cordon). Tourist stuff / sites will be generally open by the weekend unless they are in the city cordon. There is still plenty of shopping in the suburbs.
- All subject to the aftershocks reducing.

There have been minor quakes in other parts of NZ and these will get media attention but generally not significant and would not normally get a mention.
