(While I have been enjoying the great advice for some time this is my first appearance in print.)

I have booked an economy RTW trip on the basis of the best fare available for the places I wished to visit. The main sectors will be with Air Canada, Lufthansa, Swiss and Singapore.

I belong to QFF and Velocity Programs. How do I take advantage of points from the airlines I am flying? Is it worth joining another Program to fit this trip? What should I then request/ask my travel agent to do?

Many thanks for your expertise.

The advice as to who to post to depends on what your flying patterns will be after your RTW trip really.
The airlines you have mentioned all belong to Star, so both QFF and Velocity aren't that great in terms of this trip. QFF is useless for this trip, and Velocity only is useful with SQ.
You may want to look into A3 (Aegean Airlines), as they tend to have the quickest way to Star Gold.

As mentioned Agean would be worth it given Gold status would come easily with your trip, and probably allow lounge access for at least part of it!

Thank you mannej and markis10 for taking the time to respond. Please excuse all ignorance shown in this reply.

1. Because I am not a regular international traveller I was only thinking points rather than status. 2. If status was a factor for this trip i.e. lounge access - I assume I would have to keep checking the Agean website to see when this was achieved? Would there be lounge benefits after returning to Australia? 3. If points were the primary factor would I be better to link my Velocity to Singapore Air for that sector and the others to say Air NZ which I may be more likely to utilise at a later date? 4. I would also prefer to accumulate points with a program where points didn't expire. 5. My future flying patterns are confined to a few domestics and an international trip every one or two years.

Your opinions are appreciated.

You earn *Gold after 16000 miles, you might find it handy to credit the SQ points to VA then change to Agean depending on your flights, what are they?

Think it might be 20k miles, minus the bonus 1k for signup.

But for a single RTW probably better going for the 3 years of status than the points for now. Once you have the status any future flights on *A will give lounge access etc, so you can earn your points in comfort.

Once you have collected 16,000 miles within one year from the date which you qualified to the Blue status, you will receive the Gold Card.

I forgot you need 4000 for blue.

Thank you markis10.

My trip is , except for a few internals, Singapore into Asia, Swiss into Europe, Lufthansa to Canada and Air Canada back to Australia.

I think I will do as suggested and assign the SQ sector to VA and Aegean for the remainder.

Appreciate everyone's contribution.

Bob I would quote point to point using the IATA codes for each sector and the current carrier. Experts like it like that!!

Having posted my request and receiving great advice from the senior experts back in April I assumed my economy RTW (Star Alliance) would lead to Gold with Aegean (perhaps even along the way) but now am a little embarrassed as on doing the calculations I seem to be well short of the required mileage (20000) even when I assign all sectors to Aegean. I have only calculated a total of 14756m + 1000m starter bonus). What am I doing wrong? Thanks, appreciate any help.

Itinerary: MEL-SIN SQ Class L 100% of 3750m = 3750m
SIN-ZCH-PMI LX Class K 50% of 7019m = 3509m
AYT-IST TK Class Y 100% of 300m = 300m
IST-FRA TK Class Q 70% of 1160m = 812m
FRA-YVR LH Class S 50% of 5010m = 2505m
YVR-SYD AC Class S 50% of 7760m = 3880
