Duty free and Aust international transit

This link is pretty clear.

Only items purchased at SIN airport DF shops and sealed and delivered to the gate by the DF shop will be permitted past the gate security checkpoint. So no items purchased in SYD can be carried through SIN security checkpoint at the gate. Plan on doing your DF purchases at SIN.

No liquids or gels greater than 100ml in size in carry on luggage. That is assuming you get off the aircraft and pass through security again, which you are doing. I think it would be OK if staying on the same flight and did not get out of aircraft whilst in transit.

Everyone in transit must deplane and clear gate security to reboard, thus only duty free liquids purchased in SIN allowed.

You do have the option of leaving some of you carry-on on board. It must be stored in the overhead lockers AND make sure you taker all valuables with you.

So you could leave that SYD or QF purchased DutyFree on board.

This was very clearly stated last Friday while taxiing to the gate at BKK. "If you do, ensure you take your BP and PP.".

Interesting, deplaning was optional. I am not sure if this is new policy or not; and if specific to BKK or other airports such as SIN.

Yes I have heard this recently. Now where was it! SIN or BKK? One or the other....

I have heard this announcement recently and I thought it was both airports but I may be wrong.

Options to deplane or not, is airport specific.

Some airports do not allow any through pax to deplane (eg AUH). Others require every through pax to deplane (eg LAX). Some allow either and leave it up to the airline.

This thread is confusing me. Are you talking about bottles of ALCOHOL only or ANY DF 'items' (as mentioned above and elsewhere)?

BTW I bought a Braun electric shaver at a DF shop in Changi airport on the weekend. I comes with a cleaning machine which uses a small plastic cartrige of alcohol as a cleaning solution. The package had a label saying the cleaning cartrige had been removed to comply with security but I got a cartridge off the sales guy separately who said he doubted very much I would get it through as it was 170ml.

But I got it through security OK, took it through the X-ray machine in a clear plastic bag & told them it was part of the shaver that was purchased right then at an airport DF shop, showed the receipt and told them it was well below the quantity of alcohol we are allowed to take into OZ (all true) and they OK'ed it.

Hey it was quite a good buy too, about A$260 instead of the A$350 odd they charge in Oz.

Any liquids, gells or pastes over 100ml.

Yup, and yet another example of why the rules are so stupid that even a place that takes security as seriously as SIN lets stuff through.

The shemozzle with restrictions on liquids/gels/pastes really has nothing to do with creating a secure environment but more the perception that something is seen to be done. No big deal if something slips through.

Correction. It is perception in some places (mainly USA) that is being managed, and the US ram-roaded restrictions on other places by saying you can't fly there if you don't do what we say.

I wonder if this is exactly because of the liquid restriction rules. QF allow you to leave belongings on board so you can buy more on board or on your way there...

It really does get pretty silly.Flying out of Barbados to JFK on AA all duty free booze was checked in at the gate and put in the hold to be collected on the carousel in JFK.This was duty free purchased after security.Told it was AA policy on all flights.
At NRT changed planes when flying JFK-BNE.Had bought 100ml perfume at JFK and figured seeing it was 100ml would have no problem.Went through security in NRT having left the perfume in its duty free bag with receipt. Was told I must take it out of packaging and put it in clear plastic bag which I did.It was then handed back to me and I was told I was right to go and did not have to put it through security again. Now what did that acheive for security.

Yesterday I had to toss away a 115ml bottle of lavender oil I purchased ay Burnie airport to take back to my wife in China - there was no checking at Burnie Airport - no terrorists down there anyway!!

When I entered Melbourne airport via the Rex terminal and went through the xray security check it was not an issue; then when I went to get on my HK flight I had to surrender it as it was over 100ml. I could have bought 12 of the smaller bottles and put them in the bomb proof plastic bag or stuck it in my checked luggage and there would have been no issues!!

There is no common sense in this entire issue!!!

The liquids restrictions are currently only implement at international terminals in Australia, not at domestic terminals.

Common sense is certainly not a synonym for security  In fact, I think they are often mutually exclusive.

Thanks NM - I live outside Oz now and wasn't aware the liquid screening is not applicable to domestic flights - please dont tell the terrorists this info!!! ;)

maybe common sense isn't that common these days??

Interesting to note that on yesterdays QF48 flight WLG-SYD there were a lot of passengers connecting to QF1 and QF31. We were asked to remain in our seats and let these people of the aircraft as we left WLG around 50 minutes late and arrived in SYD around 20 minutes late.

Very quickly the line came to a standstill as people were getting their carry on from the overhead bins. I was in a row 5 and I started talking to a lady standing next to me waiting to connect to QF31. I had also seen her in the Qantas Club in WLG earlier. She was carrying duty free alcohol she bought in New Zealand and I told her that she will lose this as she was going through security. I hope I was right and if transitting through SYD international passengers still have to go through security.

Anyway I was not trying to be smart but not sure why she was not advised in WLG that if transitting through SYD she cannot take duty free alcohol. I just felt sorry for her but she just laughed at me and said that she will enjoy drinking her duty free. Unless she planned to drink 2 litres very quickly that duty free alcohol was going to remain in SYD while she continued her journey on QF31.

You are probably correct John, but in situations like this I expect she will subsequently blame you! It's mere human nature i.e. Shoot the messenger.

I was actually hoping I was wrong. Anyway unless her final destination for the evening was SIN she would have lost the duty free anyway.

Does QF allow you to keep duty free purchases on board while transitting SIN, BKK or HKG? I seem to remember an announcement recently when I was getting off in HKG, coming from LHR, that passengers can keep their carry on in the overhead lockers during the transit.
