I am going to LHR next week and will return to MEL via HKG, will I be able to buy duty free alcohol from the LHR duty free shop or will it be confiscated in HKG? Unfortunately the transit is only 3 hours so there's no way I can short check the bag to HKG and put my duty free alcohol in.

Certainly there were no gate/aerobridge bag searches before QF30 earlier this month - but I saw no-one with sealed tamper proof bags.

@glasszon , you may be able tot get through the HKIA transit security between airside arrivals and airside departures in a sealed bag.

Frequently Asked Questions, Contact Us - Hong Kong International Airport (see 21.)
Liquid purchases that are in excess of 100ml may be allowed through the security screening point at HKIA upon satisfactory checks if they meet the following requirements:

  • purchased from airports which have implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids (passengers are advised to check with their airlines on local requirements adopted at different countries) ; or
  • purchased on board Hong Kong registered aircraft (Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Express and Hong Kong Airlines); or
  • purchased on board non-Hong Kong registered aircraft whose previous port of call is an airport which has implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids; and
  • liquid purchases are packed in a sealed plastic bag that is both tamper-evident and display satisfactory proof of purchase on the day(s) of the journey.

Thanks all, I will try to make my purchase at HKG duty free shop on the outbound leg to avoid the risk entirely, but will keep LHR duty free as a last resort if needed.

Did I hear or fead somewhere that HKG & LHR have duty-free booze sellers that are all part of the same global conglomerate, so you can buy in LHR and pick-up in SYD?

It’s been a few years since I looked in LHR, but the duty-free there was considerably more exxy than the (duty included) supermarkets like Tesco.

There are gate searches; I think the question is whether you an get stuff delivered to the gate post-search such that it’s considered ‘safe’.

Am flying out of HKG tomorrow night on QF30 and will report back whether or not there are gate searches

It will be good to know! There are reports that from some airports, the secondary LAG screening at the gate for non-stops to Australia is no longer done. Of course it only ever applied to airports outside the USA and NZ that had "central" LAG screening, rather than at the gate.

I can report that it's most certainly still "alive and well" at certain airports, having undergone it personally a few times in recent weeks.

Well I certainly didn't have a secondary check at HKG AP last night. So here's hoping all goes well for @glasszon
No gate search for me on Sunday either.

Still, I don't think HKG Duty Free will sell Alcohol to a PAX bound for Oz.

Thanks all, I am flying out this weekend and will be back the following weekend, will post an update when I am back. :)
