It's been a while since I thought about it but is the old lurk of booking a Dom fare on Mel - Syd using the JQ9/18/27 Int'l flights to get into the Flounge still a thing or did it die out?

Think those are gone but there are some oddballs still.

I know Wednesday's there's MEL-CNS at 0740 on a 788 that's available for the early rises.

It's at least available for Feb 10 :)

There's still JQ25 Sydney to Tokyo via Cairns; assuming they would just sell you SYD-CNS on that flight.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Not forgetting that if JQ knew what you were doing, they can move you from that dream, onto a purely dom flight.
In the past, (and I have used it twice) and many other pax also were doing the orange D card thing, it was a great way for me to try the J lounges in SYD, but these days, with less flights doing the dom pax on an int flight bizzo, its harder.
I wouldn't put it past them to put you onto a purely dom flight though.
JQ cancelling flights is still a prevalent thing.

The number of pax using JQ to purely sneak into the F lounge is so minimal that you're not on their radar.

That said, the usual issues of JQ cancelations remain in place

These days they seem to happen on thw odd occasion where a repisition is required or some other irregular cause.

It does seem when they happen they don't show up for booking until a week or three beforehand, so much harder to get a price beat fare.

You really need to just keep looking on a regular basis.

IMHO you are better off booking for a cheap trans Tasman sale fare.

A JQ38 operating the next two Tue mornings SYD-MEL (for example)...

Google is pretty good at finding them - just search flights xx_ to yyy and look for 2-digit flight numbers

It's not even sneaking, this is a published benefit for WP even when travelling on JQ. If they have a low enough capacity it's worth it for them to still sell the tickets and I'm sure they would still make a nice profit from you whether it be points or cash.

They regularly cancel these flights so you need to be prepared for that. I agree the percentage of people booking them purely for Flounge is so minimal I doubt JQ even realise people do it.

As long as you're airside before it's cancelled no problem I would have thought? :)

They regularly cancel them a few weeks I'm advance and move you to a regular dom flight. I've been stung before.

I can assure you 'I want a refund, not to be moved to another flight because the only reason for the flight was to visit the Flounge' is not a valid reason for a refund.

Yep - after two such episodes, I no longer bother - JQ domestic out of SYD is bad enough - out of MEL it's woeful, both pre T4 and now.
