In two weeks I have a SYD - MEL flight for which I have requested a points upgrade to J (I know this places me one step away from redeeming points for a toaster). As the title suggests Classic Award Availability exists in J but my request has been wait listed.

Any thoughts on this? My understanding was it was the same booking code/class - so award availability means a seat is available for a points upgrade. I'm booked on a flexi saver ticket (V class) so what am I missing?

Since you booked and registered U class may have become available. The request for an upgrade isnt a waitlist as such rather, a booking notation that gets converted to a waitlist with the time frame for actioning requests eg 48hrs-4hrs.
However I was told they have a trawl that looks for bookings where requests have been done and J classic seats subsequently become available daily. However if you can see space now, rather than risk, it call the contact centre and get them to put you straight on.
cheers

Did the upgrade happen automatically?

Didn't want to risk it - so switched to a different flight and then back to my original. The upgrade cleared on the original flight when I re-applied for it.
