Does Closing Beaches Make Any Sense?

Renato1,

It seems to me that this thread is you against the everyone and that you argue against some answers, ignore others and never actually answer a lot of comments.

Irrespective, I ask that if you truely believe what you are saying what would you do or say to actually resolve the situation/issues and help remedy the spread of COVID-19?

If you like this, be sure to look up the ”no doze” thread

Yes, that’s the one I was thinking of

Unfortunately the system is not fool proof but does that mean any of us have to be one of the fools.

I just don't understand what people don't understand.
Actually not many of us are fools.

I was one of the people who did not take this seriously. Totally underestimated the seriousness of the virus. But at the same time governments around the world who have experts at their disposal did not act quickly enough or gave the wrong message.

For Australia only I think these statistics are fairly accurate. 65% of cases have come from overseas, 25% of the cases have got it from someone they know and only 6% of the cases do not know how they contracted the virus.

Early on it was quite clear that only people arriving from overseas had the virus. Most did not know they had it but they were allowed to carry on with their business and many took domestic flights to their final destination and told to self isolate without any testing.

The Ruby Princess fiasco should never have been allowed. Cruise ship arrives in Australia with sick people and everyone goes off without being tested and another 2700 go off on cruise for 11 days. They only went to New Zealand and were mistakenly allowed back to Australia as this cruise ship was deemed low risk. Over 100 infected and God knows how many others have been infected.

How these backpackers were allowed to roam free spreading the virus is beyond my comprehension.

Now you expect people who have been doing the right thing to put their lives on hold to slow down the spread of virus. Not stop it but slow it down. How long? 1 month? 2 months? 6 months? 12 months? As long as it takes? All of the above is a long time especially for those who don't have an income.

In theory if you enforced a total lockdown of everyone then in 14 days you should know who has the virus and who hasn't. But then you'd need to isolate any of the people who come into contact with them for at least 14 days.

I have not doubt we'll beat this virus but how many lives will be lost in the process?

I have a 3 year old daughter who is bored as she has been locked inside for over a week. Can't keep her locked inside forever while the world looks for answers but I also can't let her out either. Not for more than a few minutes anyway and she does not understand what's going on.

I'm also struggling to understand and I have this feeling this virus is man made which makes it even harder to understand.

What makes you think that? There is no evidence to suggest SARS-CoV-2 is man made.

I truly enjoy all of Renato's postings. He does these from the heart, in a way that is refreshing. I admire his courage and sheer clarity of feeling.

He may think that this virus is a man-made invention - I disagree with this, but also understand that some people want to make sense of it by thinking thus.

t the end of the day, re Renato, I keep thinking of some old advice my father gave me: " Don't try to teach the pig to sing. You will waste time, and it will irritate the pig" :)

Whilst I understand that JohnK is not on the likes of Facebook, there have been a number of viral posts suggesting that the virus is indeed man-made and the sinister reasons behind it

Yes, there are always viral posts about everything. I just wish that an esteemed member of AFF such as John K would not read, let alone beleive, such rubbish that is specifically designed to catch people who are vulnerable.

There's no clear evidence but there have been many little clues for quite some time. I don't read the viral posts.

Closing beaches is part of the plan. It's all about control. It's about disrupting our lives. Look at the panic all around.

Beaches in SA aren't closed. I guess we got left off the plan.

Walking up the boardwalk from Henley to Grange. So many walkers but all very safe. And so many police cars patrolling up and down. Probably not going to have any burglaries around here for a while. I wonder what Easter and school hols will bring.

At the risk of being called every name under the sun, I live at Bondi Beach and was on the beach - with my Epidemiologist husband - on the day it was closed. We spent about an hour at the southern end on the sand and in the water, and didn't come within 10 metres of another person the entire time. I appreciate the northern end may have been different, and hence has 'ruined it for everyone'.
I asked my husband about the risk, and he said it was the lowest risk thing we did all day, we were much closer to others in the supermarket and just walking down the street. The unfortunate consequence has been - in a suburb where many people have no private outdoor space, not even a balcony - locals seeking exercise and fresh air have been pushed onto paths and into parks that are a lot more crowded.
I accept that it was perhaps needed as a 'gesture' to make people take it more seriously, but the Council have taken it way too seriously by implementing a 24/7 closure in my opinion, I hope its opened again as the weather cools and large crowds are unlikely.
