OK, so almost EVERYBODY has a smart phone / ipad/ ipod, My thoughts are a wireless network on the aircraft, you can hook up to the network, with your own wireless device and watch whatever you want. Pretty sure if they paid the copyright / public view fee, then there would be no copyright file sharing issue. With this, you could use your own equipment, and they would not have the expense / weight issue of installing a whole system / screens etc.
I think it would work.

Edit,,, it would work, provided they installed power outlets, not so bad on short haul, however BNE-PER, the Iphone (Even in flt mode) gets flat pretty quick

I think that idea could work, however streaming high quality video to just 30pax would cause WiFi to struggle, let alone 150.

At work we have problems when more than 5 people use WiFi for web browsing per Access Point.

Maybe Virgin Australia can come up with some sort of magical solution?

Never thought of the capacity issue, I know what you mean, any more than 5-10 and it slows considerably. However, most hotels have some pretty good hotspots, maybe that sort of system (Im not up on PC stuff so please excuse my ignorance, or Daftness)

The main difference is there is a huge difference in traffic between people casually browsing the internet, and those watching high quality videos.

I think we need to think outside the box. It dosen't have to be a seat-back system or a portable system. Maybe there is something else, something new, something we haven't heard of before?

I must admit, I am the bandwidth hog then, whenever Im in a hotel I tend to have my favourite TV shows that I watch streamed live (No Ads !!). SO if you have in some hotel, and the internet really sucked, sorry about that, it may have been me

I can't believe that anyone thinks the curtain works on qantas flights. I'm 99% on 737s and from what I've observed anyone from the exit row forward will use the front toilet. There is nothing exclusive about the J toilet on qantas. Personally, I like to use the rear toilet as the walk is good and I can't stand up straight in the forward toilet.

Wonder if it actually keeps the Y passengers out of the J cabin....

As the rope segregates F, I highly doubt it.

We are using the HP AFAIK. Thanks for that article. Really interesting. Might take on fixing the WiFi myself. If I master that, I'll offer my services to Qantas.

But yes, streaming video to 50 devices would kill WiFi.

PErsonally i think the airline goes broke if the number of seats lost doesn't equal the amount of extra revenue generated. I think the number of extra leg room seats is WAY too may to justify the loss of passengers.

I think a "main cabin select" type deal with exit rows, row 3 etc being offered to status PAX or those willing to pay extra and a slightly more generous leg room in the front half of the plane is a sensible compromise that probably wont send the airline broke.

With the current PE setup on the Embraer, from experience and just my general opinion, that Rows 3 should also be kept for Y+ only pax. Keeping all three rows to PE certainly would give it that more exclusive feel as its about as basic as a product that you can get with nothing on offer apart from the nicer seat.

My last E190 flight had 4 kids behind me while the parents sat in Row 4. She asked me how much I paid then I asked the same, $50 each way!

But I was thinking, how on earth do they plan to put a J seat in the EJet, the cabin cross section is about 1m shorter than the 737. 1x1 perhaps?

2-1 is not uncommon on Regional jets elsewhere. My money would be on that.
