One other stupid question but I think it's worth asking. Is there any requirement that the travel must originate in Australia? For instance if I were to fly from Japan to Australia on a QF issued ticket, with a QF flight number (obviously on QF metal) would that qualify?

The reason I ask is there are some particularly good J deals ex-NZ. For instance consider these one ways:

160 status credits for 541 by flying CHC to BNE:

320 status credits for $876 by flying AKL to DRW (via MEL):

My understanding is *any* one or more QF operated and coded flight(s) will work.

I haven’t checked but there is usually an exclusion for QFFs with non-Oz addresses.

My thinking would be to book a "domestic" classic award using my Avios points with QF to AKL then take the (air)bus back to DRW to qualify for World Platinum status. As an aside, my QFF address is AU since that's where I live. For those curious here's what the Avios award pricing looks like:

Have you checked that both legs are in J?

Nice time of year to be in DRW (check accommodation before you book flights!) assuming you’ll stay in DRW? Crazy not to!

Seems like CR availability to Darwin even in peak season is okay. But the accommodation prices in Jun-Aug... eye-watering stuff.

Can get 244 status credits in DSC if you book SYD-ADL-DRW-ADL-SYD though, which isnt bad for 83k points.

Havent found a good status earner ex-SYD so far, looks like I will settle for domestic CR status runs in J.

Ive found an ok deal OOL-MEL-AKL RTN on dates I can travel and where i can apply a Amex credit; but obviously I need to get to/from OOL.

Thing is I cant get QF or Amex online to quote me mix class fares i.e.
SYD-OOL in Y + OOL-MEL-AKL in J + AKL-MEL-OOL in J + OOL-SYD in Y

I realise I can book separately, but I thought if all on one ticket Id be better protected against missed connections.

Is the only way to do this to call?

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Well the best trans tasman I could do on a quick hunt around was MCY-SYD-AKL-SYD-MCY for $1,862. Out 27 Oct, back 29 Oct IIRC about $3.88/SC. BNE, ROK origin and WLG, CHC destinations were a little more. There is plenty of availability at these fares.

I watched the bargain seats BNE-MEL-AKL disappear around the dates shown on the AFF article sample.

Two upsides, burned $1,000 off a qantas pass. which was most of my leftover flight credits and made the cash outlay about $1.80 per SC, and AKL-SYD on QF4 which might be jolly.

Cheers skip

I'm wondering if you could maybe set this up as a multi-city ticket with the sectors SYD-OOL-MEL-AKL departing on the same date and AKL-MEL-OOL-SYD departing on the same date but later using the multi-city search on Qantas? You could then go sector by sector selecting which cabin you want.

Pretty sure that doesn’t work for revenue fares (usually can’t mix and match whY and J) but could/should for CRs.

It's going to take me a few more years to not associate QF3/4 with HNL. Someone else posted about QF3 upthread and I assumed they meant SYD-HNL, not SYD-JFK.
Wait until the sunrises on non-stop QF3 SYD-JFK!

OT for now, but I reckon a future QF 1 (SYD-LHR non-stop) and QF 4 (JFK-SYD non-stop) will be dubbed the “are we there yet?” flights! I’d be there in F/J but I’d rather stick pins in my eyes before attempting in anything less….

That's SCs earned while using points as a Points Club (Plus) member travelling J?
Isn't it 18 (ADL-SYD) + 38 (ADL-DRW) = 56
return and doubled = 224 SC?

Yep couldnt get a mixed class revenue fare to work online anywhere, so ended J booking via Amex (to use the $450 Travel Credit) and the Y direct with QF. Didnt want to overnight in the airport so will spend a couple of nights in Auckland before returning.

Reasonably happy that will earn 600SCs in one weekend for $1931 so $3.21/SC (or $2.46/SC if i deduct the travel credit). Thats halfway to requalifying for Platinum.

Still have 3 smaller bookings to make for periods that fall into this window.

I'm sure this has been answered but couldn't find it on searching for it - do DSC count towards the 500 status credits you need for the loyalty bonus?

Any ideas of decent status runs from Darwin? Looking like DRW-AKL-SYD is 660SC at $2700ish. Or if codeshares are allowable for DSC, NOU?? Help!

No to codeshares (but QF metal to NOU works).

As was mentioned above AKL to DRW (via BNE) can be booked as a one-way for $872 AUD in J which would attract 320 status credits. You could then book a one-way award trip from DRW to AKL to position for the deal:
