re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Hi guys, your advice/abuse please. Have done some reading but still not 100% sure of my facts so figured I'd ask. Was QF gold for ~9 years due to work and never really paid much attention to it. New job is on a VA charter flight so not getting the points and its hurting being back in plebsville :(

I'm flying out of Perth, currently at silver, 140SC in the bank and anniversary 31/May/16. I have the below currently booked, and I've been relying on the Qantas status points calculator for my maths, is that generally accurate with other airlines flights?

- PER-SYD-LAX-SEA-YLW return in January. PER-SYD-LAX (S) on AA and LAX-SEA-YLW (G,V) on AS. From what I can see this is worth 20-45-0-0 SC = 130SC total
- PER-HK-NRT return in March in CX (E) = 200SC
- This brings me to 470SC

This leaves me looking for another ~230Sc between now and May. Does anyone have suggestions of economic status runs I can do from Perth? As part of my trip to Japan I am considering HND-CTS as part of my travel which will add another ~40

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

PER then Au east coast then NZ all in J. 120 x 2 = 240.
Do it Mar Easter time.
One trip.
Or many small cheaper Y trips.
Try EK Airbus380 with a QF flight number.

As the OP is going to the US it would be far better and more cost effective to do a short Status Credit run on AA whilst there.

Will be in SIN/KUL end of March 2016, any suggestion for cheap/affordable status run ??

Disagree. I know you're obsessed with the EK trans tasman thing (and I have 2 coming up soon so I get it) but..

1. Suggesting Easter time makes no sense - fares to/from PER will be higher due to the holidays. I would not recommend for an economic run, let alone the cost of QF J/F trans-tasman fares on top

2. As suggested also, given pax will be in North America, much easier to do a YUPP type fare on AA to get the SC's much more cheaply.

good luck.

That's the issue I have with AP's posts in this regard, they're always a trans-Tasman in EK J or F suggestion that doesn't take into account the particular circumstances of the poster. This thread is about the "best" status run options, which should imply something that is cost effective, not a one-size-fits-all that is misleading at best and lazy at worst.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Cheers for the suggestions. Unfortunately my itin in the US doesn't leave me any time for a run there. Really need to find something out of PER.

DO you have any time around NRT, apparently there are good deals on JAL domestic F/J that might get you over the line.

You can earn 180 SC's for a 5 hour return run LAX to DEN at a cost of ~USD500.
...
- PER-SYD-LAX-SEA-YLW return in January. PER-SYD-LAX (S) on AA and LAX-SEA-YLW (G,V) on AS. From what I can see this is worth 20-45-0-0 SC = 130SC total
...
Are those G,V AS flights on AA flight numbers?

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

PER is tough due to higher airfares on most routes making economic accural of SC's difficult (plus the time involved). Maybe PER-SIN and something out of SIN? or pricing out something like PER-MEL-SYD-OOL, or PER-DRW-CNS perhaps?

the AP suggestion may work if one got a reward ticket to say MEL or SYD then a sale J fare to AKL could work out reasonably cost effective (the sale fares have been around $550 o.w. for J when they show up for 80SC).

Given there is a current domestic (Y) sale on, it may be worth pricing out various options out of PER to see how they could work out cost wise... maybe for example, routing PER-ADL-MEL as opposed to PER-MEL may help, or look for destinations forcing connections eg: PER-HBA via SYD/MEL or PER-TSV via SYD/BNE.

I hear ya, and I'm kicking myself for booking what I have booked. I called AA and they wanted $500 to change my inflexible flights around. I only have 3-4 hours in LAX in both directions and similar in SEA.
The LAX-SEA-YLW portion has AS flight numbers, G,V on the way out and T, T on the way back so 0 SCs earned ?

I have 56k FF points so could head to MEL/SYD and look at options from there? I can also see some availability on PER-SIN in November for 56k points return so I could start from there too. or take J* for $400 and 50SC and start from there

if you can stomach it, I'd take the JQ option.... that's probably a better cost/benefit than spending 56k points.... but that's just me

PER-BNE/MEL-CNS on Flex fares approx $470 each way earns 70 SCs one way. Not sure how efficient that is.

A random search using the Gift redemption search engine also reveals CNS-BNE-MEL-PER for $1039 one way for 100 SCs.

Not the best efficiency I'm sure.

I don't know of any domestic fare from anywhere to anywhere that is better value than PER-SYD-CNS in Flex Y for $463 @ $6.61/SC

To get the 240 SCs an option is PER-SYD-CNS / CNS-BNE-SYD return for a total of 240 SCs & $1600 @ $6.67/SC

If you have the time and the budget SriLankan has dirt cheap J fares ex-SIN to CDG, FRA and FCO, circa AUD2500 for what mus be somewhere around 400 SCs return. If you're looking for something shorter and cheaper I would consider ex-SIN MH fares to north Asia.
