I'm in MEL at the moment, and just hammered out 300 photos, so will process them all soon... camera performed very nicely ;)

Nice Pics - a bit of advice, it's better to post links to images rather than having 2½Mb posts - on dialup it can take 'hours' to load and otherwise affect those ith bandwidth limitations (whether technical or financial)

Oops, thanks Serfty. I didn't quite realise that they were so big. I'll edit them now.

Cheers,

Love anything by Olympus! Have had an Olympus digital camera since 1999 and currently have the SP510 - great price, looks much more expensive than it is!

PS - Don't forget to do a postal vote or vote at the airport before you fly out!

Yes a good reminder thanks! I did remember, it's just sitting under a pile of paper on my desk at the moment.

Actually if you can front up a designated polling centre you can do an "Early Vote". (Early voting opens 2 "work" weeks before the actual election date.)

I did mine last week - I found it much easier than a postal vote ...

I am now heartily fed up with my Panasonic TZ1 which I only bought in about March. The flash is worse than useless - it has basically two effective settings - "white out" or off.

About the only good thing is the video function which is much better than than my old HP. Looks time for anothre replacement camera :(

I dont think the TZ3 will be on the list despite the recommendations here :(

Any updates on this topic?

Whilst sitting in the lounge awaiting mi flight to TYO I'd thought it might be a good idea to get a new camera down at Akihabara (sp???). I've yet to read through the entire thread... but have got 2 nights in TYO so will defs have a read here before running off to buy it. Don't need a super fancy one. Just need a point and shoot one for holiday pics, TRs, feet shots ;) and general randomness. Oh and preferably one of those sleek, slim ones that can fit right into the pocket along with my cell.

Cheers. :)

I was also in NRT 14 days ago en route to LHR & Milan - and found a great 'Nikon Çoolpix' @ Akihabara. My criteria were similar - thin & light to slip into a pocket. It is 8.5MPix and cost about A$280.
My collegue found a nice Sony for A$400. I find NRT quite competitive on price.
When we met other colleagues from at LHR Terminal 5 to travel to Milan - it emerged that all 5 had purchased a camera en route. 2 with a Panasonic and the other a cheapie. The brand names all cost A$250-400. The enevitable 'mine's bigger than yours (MPix)' discussion ensued.

Question : How do you insert your pics into text ? They look great and I presume are low enough resolution to be acceptable to the forum.

Cheers GCD123

Thanks for the tip.
Is there a recommended size & resolution to format the images ?

a couple of things to consider:

  • buying in tokyo will often mean that you don't get world wide warranty (there are only a couple major brands that will offer this)
  • the bottom has dropped on simple point'n'shoot digi prices in australia - not to metion the added benefit of TRS when purchasing in australia
  • The cheapest digi media I have found (SD&CF) is in Australia (which I only discovered after thinking I was getting a bargain in Tokyo!)
  • If you are going to buy in Tokyo then Akihabara is an amazing experience, however places like in Yodobashi & BIC Camera will match these prices
  • Lowepro camera bags are alot cheaper in Tokyo (DSLR backpacks are amazingly cheap!)
  • Also, if you do buy, remember to flash your passport for that "sales tax" free purchase
enjoy!

i won't tell you then that they are available in Australia for AUD$375 (after TRS) & with australian sellers warranty ;)

...bragging to your mates that you bought it in Tokyo is worth a little extra!

good work with the international warranty too! (seeing as it's a sony it will come in handy :D ).......j/k ;)

I find Sony P&S camera's have quite poor 'steady shake' technology & night time photography compared to some other similar priced cameras such as canon, panasonic.

However this hasn't stopped me from purchasing two Sony P&S in a row, the former being a DSCT100 in black (which had some weird continous vibration occurred after I dropped it  ) ... now I have a DSC T2 in the white. Very cute'sy type camera & does work well in good light conditions.

Next camera on my list ..... a dSLR (if and when I come to terms with it's larger sizing)

It has certainly been my experience with Sony cameras that the low light photography is not up with other similar cameras. Fine out in the sun, bit for indoors etc, others are better.
