So after reading this forum for ages it's only now become clear to me that one can take a RTW trip, arrive home in same city of departure, yet then tack on a couple of domestic flights as part of the same ticket - is that correct?

IE: MEL-SYD-PER-NRT-LHR-JKF-MEL.... MEL-PER-MEL

If so, then how annoying that I've booked 3 RTW trips in last 6 months and come home from each of them and booked additional domestic flights separately. And what a lesson to learn now.

IF you're talking about the oneworld explorer:
Yes but there are limitations:
- Only 2 stopovers allowed in SWP (your continent of origin)
- Only 1 transcontinental flight allowed, ie between PER and MEL/SYD/BNE/CNS [but CBR isn't included in this limitation ;)]
- Only 1 flight allowed between DRW and MEL/SYD
- Only 1 flight allowed between BME and MEL/SYD
- Can't go back to point of origin.

Your itinerary isn't valid as you have 3 transcons, and you are not allowed to go back to MEL, ur point of origin.
You could however attempt something at the end like: JFK-SYD...SYD-MEL separately booked, and CBR-PER-CBR with MEL-CBR-MEL separately booked. You can end the RTW in CBR. Beware of the 2 stopover restriction though so if u're intending to stopover in SYD and PER at the start of the journey... you can't stopover anywhere in SWP at the tailend of the journey.

Don't know about rules for the Global Explorer, which I understand is based on distance.

I'm confused. Mileage Monkey is giving me the okay on this routing - this isn't the case due to 2 x Perth trips?

1: MEL-SYD: 1st of 4 (Southwest Pacific)
2: SYD-PER: 2nd of 4 (Southwest Pacific)
3: PER-NRT: intercontinental
4: NRT-BKK: 1st of 4 (Asia)
5: BKK-LHR: intercontinental
6: LHR-HAM: 1st of 4 (Europe)
7: HAM-LHR: 2nd of 4 (Europe)
8: LHR-JFK: intercontinental
9: JFK-LAX: 1st of 1 (North America Transcon)
*9: JFK-LAX: 1st of 6 (North America)
10: LAX-MEL: intercontinental
11: MEL-PER: 3rd of 4 (Southwest Pacific)
12: PER-MEL: 4th of 4 (Southwest Pacific)

Congratulations!! Valid itinerary!!! - (34383 miles)

Gee i wish I had known this flew RTW in J (DONE5?) in dec-jan and had no idea this was possible. I wish I had a travel agent who knew. To extra j class flights for free would have been great.

Any newbies out there - the most important thing I learned was - do not let the agent issue you with a paper ticket. It was a nightmare - eticket is the only way to go. If only it could all be done, booked and paid for online.

It is impossible to issue e-tickets for itineraries with more than 16 segments, and this includes surface segments.
Things might change post 2007 though, when the IATA virtually clamps down on transactions involving paper tickets.

It is not impossible to do so just that AA cannot issue more than 16 sectors due to their systems.

Mmm, interesting.
Could someone on a RTW simply get their ticket reissued, after traveling a couple of segments, as an eticket by another carrier which has the capability then?

Why would they want to? do that and you get slugged for fuel fines on the remaining 18 sectors based on the reissuing carriers fine policy. But , yes, if reissued by another carrier and the itinerary is eticketable then they can do.

Eh, didn't know that happens...
I don't mind the ATB2 paper tickets really, but I'm prone to wrecking my tickets if they're on the thin red carbon paper due to carelessness.

Yeah, and I'm always paranoid that a check-in agent is going to accidentally remove an extra coupon, without my realising.

Would be hard to explain where that coupon went at BCN checking-in for an IB flight!:!:

I always double check the coupons. Seen the wrong ones be pulled too many times, or wrong ones attached to BPs.

Dave

I had an AA booked DONE4 recently that was a paper ticket. I had to make changes at LAX and they reissued the ticket as Eticket - I only paid the $125 fee. I guess that was because it was an AA ticket being reissuedd by AA.
