Delayed flight SIN-MEL

I'm on the QF10 that Bundy Bear is on as mentioned by him in a recently opened thread (in fact we had adjacent seats in PE, but my upgrade to J came through, and he may seek an alternate routing), and its departure from SIN is apparently delayed from 1955 Monday to 0640 Tuesday (that's an unusual amount of notice for a delay).

I'm not overly fussed by the delay per se (though I'd prefer it didn't happen), but it's an 'awkward' departure time. Going to bed means getting up again around 0300, which goes against the laws of nature. It would also involve another hotel night.

I'm thinking I might just 'hang' at my hotel lounge after checkout (they said upon checkin I could do that because they couldn't offer me late checkout due to being fully booked) and go the airport late at night (train it there) then 'hang' at the airport till departure (maybe catch some sleep there).

My questions are:

1) Can I checkin at say 2300 for the 0640 flight? I seem to recall SIN offers 'early' checkin?

2) The SIN lounge hours are listed as Business: 0630 to 2330 daily, First: 0630 to 0930 and 1500 to 2330.
Are they likely to vary these hours to cater for the delay and new departure time?

3) If I had decided I wanted to hotel it another night (and it is not too late for me to change my mind on this), albeit with a rather early checkout, is QF under any obligation to assist me here? A hotel at the airport could be useful.

Any answers, alternative suggestions, or other input appreciated.

Thanks

EC listed here: Early Check-in - Changi Airport . Limited hours, but it does open at midnight.

Lounge may open early, but I doubt it would open up until the incoming flight arrives.

I would claim from QF for accom - their delay caused an unwanted overnight, if refused then push to Travel Insurance.
Also would keep receipts for meals, phonecalls etc. And as posted in the other thread, if relying on Credit Card based insurance, you should try to pay for things with that card.

Most TI policies will kick in for delay when it's 4/5/8+ hour delays, read your policy carefully.

1. Being in J you should be able to use SATS Premium desk which should allow the early checkin.
2. I doubt it.
3. Unless advised when you got the flight advice - I doubt it. Most travel insurance kicks in for a 6hr delay.

My experience with QF in SIN in terms of getting accom, meal vouchers etc has been good, but I have typically only been able to sort it out at the airport.

Insurance may be a backup here.

I would assume that the lounges and also the check in would open at 3am ish.

Also, IIRC - Skyview lounge (the Cathay one) is open 24/7, so you could try and use that one...

I'd check-in at the normal time for flight. Then see what is offered. If it's not satisfactory, take control and claim on travel insurance. It's Changi. The city is not far away. And the CP at the airport is excellent. But when I was in a similar situation with Qantas they did offer a hotel but it was not the CP.

Qantas Conditions of Travel cover this, specifically section 9.1 Schedule Changes and Cancellations by us. As it is an overnight delay Qantas should reimburse you the accommodation cost.

If, due to circumstances within our control, after you buy your Ticket we make a significant change to the scheduled departure time of your flight or the flight is cancelled, we will:

...

if your travel with us is delayed overnight and you have already commenced travel on your booking (ie you are at an 'away' port), use reasonable endeavours to assist you to find overnight accommodation or reimburse your reasonable accommodation costs if we have not provided accommodation.

Delay on QF10 SIN-MEL A380
Delay on QF31 SYD-SIN A380
Delay on QF9 MEL-SIN A380
Delay on QF29 MEL-HKG B744 (although due to the charter flight over the Antarctic today)

Delay on QF10 SIN-MEL A380
Delay on QF31 SYD-SIN A380
Delay on QF9 MEL-SIN A380

The golden question is: Why?

ISTR VH-OQL (one of the newest A380s) went tech somewhere (either LHR or LAX) just a day or two ago so maybe it relates to that.

Probably for the QF10, but for the other flights the a/c have been at the airports all day.

Not exactly the same situation, but I was on QF5 a few years ago we were delayed in SIN for 6 or more hours. We were transiting and just went to the lounge as usual. It was a case of rolling delays, as in 2 hours, another hour etc. Anyway, they just let us stay in the lounge, at about midnight there was a big influx of passengers, which I assume was everyone else from our flight.

So you could just check in as per the normal time, go to the lounge and stay the flight is called ;)

A little late for this now, although in that situation, I would turn up to the airport at around 5pm (local time) and try to squeeze onto one of the flights heading back to the land down under. In the evening there are quite a few other flights, including the QF6 to SYD on the 744, plus a BA operated 777 as QF320, a couple of A333 to PER/ADL, and either an A333 or a 744 going to BNE as QF52. Surely, they can organise a domestic transfer once back on home soil.

Thanks for the replies/advice/info - it is appreciated.

I believe we will just turn up for checkin at the originally scheduled time and see what they say. If they do not offer (practical) accommodation then I will tell them who I am (:p) and throw a hissy fit and demand it. Well not really, but there will certainly be some earnest conversation happening.

Ideal situation would involve staying at CP Airport, but I understand we may have to turn around and come back into town should accommodation be offered.

Where have people managed to obtain accomm/meals vouchers? Is this at the checkin desk or some other desk?

Oh, and my travel insurance appears to cover me for up to $200 per day in this sort of situation (if I have read it correctly, and it is possible I have not).

Bundy Bear got through to QF, who said they could 'do nothing' for him as far as alternate flights was concerned - I'm sure he'll try again at the airport.

From the qantas conditions of carriage.

(c) Significant Change
If, due to circumstances within our control, after you buy your Ticket we make a significant change to the scheduled departure time of your flight or the flight is cancelled, we will:

  • rebook you on the next available flight (or combination of flights) on our services to your booked destination at no additional cost to you
  • alternatively, at your option, refund the applicable fare

If you want to get on another flight they are obligated to refund the fare...
