Any advantage for getting the AMEX DJ Platinum?

Sounds like i can dump my Edge for this card?
40,000 sign up bonus, 4 points shop in DJ and free tailor and everything else same as DJ AMEX card. But I don’t think it is worth 395 dollar annual fee.
The supermarket and Petrol is the same with DJ AMEX

Why dump the edge?

As GW says (and I have pointed out above and on other threads), you can get the sign-on bonus for this card even though you have existing other Amex-issued cards.

Gary makes a good point about SPG/Marriott however, it would depend on who you want to transfer your points to.

As an example, as I understand it, the Edge converts to Asia Miles at 1:1 whereas the DJ card converts to AM at 2:1. The DJ card converts to QF at 1: 0.75 whereas I don't think the Edge can convert to QF (at least not directly)

I have the DJ card (and just now received 20k retention bonus) and am looking to get the Edge in addition.

I suggest you get the DJ card and keep the Edge as well, which will give you flexibility in where you transfer points to.

Ah I did not know that the DJ Card has different redemption rates. I thought all points will pool into the same account.

Wanted to dump the Edge because it did seem that the DJ card had everything the Edge had, + more (eg 3:1 for petrol, $99 annual fee but with a reasonable retention bonus). I dont have particular use for the $200 travel voucher

It's not always different. Depends on where you want to send your points.

I forget to mention that you still can get the sign up bonus from DJ AMEX even though you previous had the platinum Charge or Explorer card before. This would work out either way even you had DJ AMEX first.

This is no longer guaranteed. I appreciate that some have reported receiving the bonus points but I would urge caution. I'm certainly aware of a significant number of people who have held an Explorer or Edge card and applied for the DJ card and DID NOT get the bonus. I referred 4 people for this card in Dec 2017, everyone of those who currently held or had held another AMEX card in the preceding 18 months did not get the bonus. I would be cautious of anyone that says you 'will' get the bonus. I think 'may' get the bonus is much more appropriated language.

I had a closer look - i normally send to Kris (sometime SPG) so the DJ card does not really work for my purpose.

The way I see it, I am not gaining much by getting the DJ card now (apart from the signup and maybe retention bonus) and maybe only for fuel.

So the conclusion is I got to keep the Edge :)

You are absolutely right. If goes for Asia Mile I would not cancel Edge Card. But I currently don’t have one. Maybe later

If you are trying to get airline miles, the edge is better because it is 1:1 and the DJ is the 2:1.
If you are aiming SPG, DJ might be the choice because of Petrol. And you can also convert your SPG to Marriott to get the package (90K SPG points for 120k-150k Miles plus seven free nights with cat 1-5 Marriott hotel).
I usually don’t collect Krismiles. Asia Mile is better for me.

Thank you for sharing.
I watched the T&C on DJ regarding the sign up bonus, it doesn’t have the same rules as other cards. It didn’t mention the 18 months rule.

As far as I know, it has Premium ascent, ascent, gateway and DJ. That is four system and could be more out there, LOL

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It didn’t mention the 18 months rule.

This is NOT correct and I think misleading of you to suggest this.

An 18 month rule DOES apply to this card. It is very clearly and unambiguously stated in the terms of the offer:

"Customers applying for the David Jones American Express Staff Card or Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other David Jones Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer."

I will check again.

Yes it does have an 18 month rule. But it is different than explorer and all others. It specifically mean you cannot have an AMEX DJ Card in last 18 month.
The others is that you cannot have any AMEX card. If my understanding is right, it means we can get the sign up bonus even though we hold the explorer or charge now.

Thanks for this information Dr Ralph.

In my case, I received a sign-on bonus for a QF Ultimate card despite having the DJ card for many years. +1 received the sign-on bonus for a DJ card despite having a QF Ultimate card that was approved and activated less than two weeks before. And we both received the referral bonus for referring each other.

Seems that the sign-on bonus availability may be more random than I previously understood. Given this inconsistency, I will use the word "may" in future, as you suggest.

Good luck to the OP.

JV

I guess that all of this just goes to show that, as is often mentioned on this forum, we are all different with different needs/wants, spending patterns, intended use of points, etc., etc.

What works best for one is not necessarily good for another.

Of course, the discussion on this (and other) communities provides the information so that we can each decide what works best for our individual situations.

Interesting.
If that is the wording of the T&C, it seems clear to me that those who hold the Edge / Charge etc should qualify for the welcome offer (the carve out being holding a DJ Credit Card Product?).

This morning I was told by other AFF member that one can have a personal Charge, two personal credit card and one DJ AMEX card. It is four AMEX cards. Can anyone confirm this?

If you're looking for a current referral link for this card, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring here, and here is my link: http://amex.com.au/refer/rossgIOxG.

If you apply you will receive 30,000 membership rewards points, and I will receive 20,000.

The annual fee of $99 is easily less than the value that can be extracted from 30,000 membership rewards points, and being able to earn 3 points per dollar on supermarket spend is such a bonus.

Just a data point, I currently hold an Explorer and received the sign up bonus for the DJ card this week, as soon as the three qualifying purchases posted to my account. So at least in my case there was no issue getting the bonus.

So the conclusion is I got to keep the Edge :)

However, 3ppd for fuel by buying Gift Cards at Coles using the Edge, and using them at Shell/Coles Express, so 3ppd for Shell fuel if you don't mind that restriction.

Adding my experience with this card.

I recently closed my Explorer and Edge cards to start the 18 month exile but still wanted to earn the 3ppd at supermarkets - I'm a big fan of SPG so this is a great earner.

I used one of the links on this thread and received the 30,000 points without issue.

If anyone would like to use a link, please consider mine:

I'll receive 20,000 points and you'll receive 30,000 (10,000 more than general sign up).

The David Jones is a great little card for $99.

3 ppd at supermarkets and petrol stations
1 ppd for utilities / government / etc (no 1/2 ppd category like other cards)
Bonus Points for spending at DJ
30,000 bonus points transfers to SPG 15,000.

Amex welcome offers (assume this is provided on every new card)
$20 credit for $40 spend at DJ's Online (Free delivery on all David Jones orders and stack with Qantas Mall to get extra points on the purchase)
$15 credit for $30 spend at Woolworths

I can confirm that some one recently received sign up bonus points even though they already had an amex.
Let me know if you need any further info.

Here's my link if anyone would like to use it:http://amex.com.au/refer/lindrvrbgv

One can apply for this card and then apply for an upgrade with bonus points later or apply for the DJ platinum directly to score 50 k bonus points if you are eligible.
