Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Cimicky Cellar Selection Shiraz, Neldner Road, Passing Clouds Shiraz and Graeme's Shiraz-Cabernet are the best recent buys, plus more Mitolo GAM 2021 cheaper than at VM.
For the Passing Clouds, just confirming this was the 2022 (as 2021 recently sold out)? Nebu wasn't appealing?

re: Carpe Diem, there were some okay deals (e.g. Wynns Black) but, as per usual, shipping costs kills any overall value.

Passing Clouds I got 2021 Shiraz and 2022 Graemes. Nebu of no interest to me.

Carpe diem I bought Powder Monkey 2018, Rockburn Pinot 2023, cheaper than Sippery, plus some other Pinots.

Completely disagree with this statement.

'Mystery wines' have become a normal way of many businesses selling techniques.
I personally agree with Tannin's statement: 'And, remember, the best/most popular wines will almost never turn into mystery lots'
I have never seen St Henri (and any Pendfold's probably), Vat 1, Wynns Cab Sav, etc., as a secret deal.
To my eyes, his statement is correct: Popular wines are never sold as 'mystery'.

Vat 1 yes. Wynns cab yes. Penfolds yes. You need to look harder. 5/10 of the most collected wines in Australia have been mystery deals in the last 5 years.

I won't comment further, but seriously to maximise mystery deals you need to actually focus, not just occasionally glance at something and say it didn't occur because the reality is that you missed it or didn't have the experience to know when/where these items are offered. Not everything is served up on a silver platter for you.

This list reads like a 20 year old list of good wines, plenty of good (better than Penfolds in particular) value for money wines out there if you buy for quality and value rather than marketing (Wynn’s excepted).

Guys. some great discussions today RE mystery wines.
I am definitely of the view they must be identified (or tasted) before you over commit.

I have also been going down the DM clearance rabbit hole. I am interested to hear from anyone who has worked at DM recently that can provide some insight.

At store level they seem to have the discretion to discount premium wines by around 30 per cent if they are not moving. . It’s tricky online to spot these discounts as they are generally not shown as clearance (online), and often vary store to store..

Clearance wines at DM used to end in $xx.78 from memory, unsure if they still do.. made searching a bit easier

Used to be the case $.XX.88 was a clearance wine. Now I look for anything that is not $XX.99 or otherwise marked as being on offer. A wine with that pricing usually indicates a clearance mark down at that specific store

Completely agree about the Nebu. Had two bottles now and very underwhelmed. Not sure what to do with the other 10 bottles as I fear it’s falling apart. Passing Clouds Shiraz is a ripper for $10 though!

Did you get the ‘21 or ‘22 Passing Clouds Shiraz? Anyone tried the ‘22?

I hope that you will comment further because I find it very hard to believe your claim!
5/10. Ok, what list are we looking at? I'm referring to Wineark most collected wine, and as far as I can see, the last version is 2023, and the top 10 are:

RankNamePosition ChangeVarietyRegion
01

Penfolds Grange - Shiraz SA
02
Penfolds St Henri 1 Shiraz SA
03
Penfolds Bin 389 1 Cabernet Shiraz SA
04
Rockford Basket Press 1 Shiraz Barossa Valley, SA
05
Moss Wood 1 Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River, WA
06
Lake's Folly Cabernets 2 Cabernet Blend Hunter Valley, NSW
07
Cullen Diana Madeline - Cabernet Blend Margaret River, WA
08
Wynns Coonawarra Estate - Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra, SA
09
Leeuwin Estate Art Series 1 Chardonnay Margaret River, WA
10
Mount Mary Quintet 2 Cabernet Blend Yarra Valley, VIC

I understand that you believe that I don't have the experience to know when/where these items are offered to quote you, but to be very honest, I find it super hard to believe that 5/10 of those wines have been offered as 'mystery wines'... I would love less aggressiveness and some facts for my and everyone's reading education, since it is the purpose of this forum.

By 'list' do you mean St. Henri and VAT 1? I think that they are great wines. I do agree that most Pendfold's are overpriced, but Vat 1 seems fairly priced to me. The quality that you get there is pretty amazing. We are possibly talking about the best Semillon in the World at $60 a bottle.

Anyway, my point (and I didn't want to start a fight  ) was just that very popular wines are not offered as 'Mystery deal'. That is all. I never said that very popular wines are better...
