Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Is this of interest to you?
150/6 @ Skye cellars
Thank you, just grabbed 6. The 40 per cent new oak is a bit intense (needs a few years) but exceptional value for money.

Fighting Dan Murphy's via live chat was a miserable affair. They seem okay with baiting people to their site with these prices they won't honour. Reckon the ACCC gets them eventually for this.

H&P lineup not that fantastic, nor have been their prices and "sales". Maybe cellerone will make the PR lines more attractive.

Neldner Road Neldner Road Shiraz 2021

Currently $20ea in 12 at Winestar, not a fan of 12 packs but this might be a good buy?
I had a crack at this. Still too young and a bit tightly wound but has all the hallmarks for an excellent wine that will really shine in 2-3 years.
Better than "The Blend" by Powell & Son that was offered around the usual suspects at a similar price.

CM over at The Wine Front gave it 94 points which is a high score there and describes the wine perfectly.

Hmm, I've not seen this label elsewhere, it's "sold out" at the winery, where other supposedly similar/better quality wines are $95, smells like "made and priced to be discounted" to me.

Another "bargain" at Winestar is Wolf Blass Black Label 2018 at $50. Not even hidden. I had it before and would not recommend.
I'd rather take the 2018 Nebu which seems still to be available for$30 at WineStar . Had a couple of bottles and really enjoyed it after it opened up.

Nah it’s the winery of David Powell, who founded Torbeck. You can read some background here.

I am sure he’s priced his wines to reflect the quality of the grapes, the winemaking, and what he thinks they are worth, not for RRP discounting.

I meant the particular label (name) of this Neldner wine, I don't remember it from prior Neldner offers, although the history of this DP incarnation is relatively short and still in an expansion phase.

Maybe he's been looking at what Dean is doing? 🤔

I am still trying to get my head around some of the quirks of the DM website. A few things are now clear. They occasionally have better prices for click and collect over delivery, even if you live close. They sometimes offer you a cheaper price at one store over another, but it’s unclear if everyone gets this price or just you via stalking your history online ha

Trying to understand DM online is just working on a headache. It's a huge frustrating mess.
They also often have better prices for some delivery items compared to C&C.
I have a couple of Parcel Collect addresses I've used to get better prices than using my home address.
I've had deliveries for friends orders where the price to them in a different part of Canberra was much more than having it delivered to me.
The one that annoys me the most is filling the cart and getting through to checkout to be told half/most/all the stuff isn't actually available.

Gotcha. Sorry. I find the branding of his various wines confusing, especially relative to Torbreck…for example naming a wine the same as the winery, like he has here.

No probs. I've been around a while, I am familiar with the roller-coaster career of DP.

Although some of the Powell&Sons and Neldner Road reds are discounted, they are mostly the lower end labels and not usually near 50% let alone 80%.
So, a new wine, immediately sold out at the winery but discounted 80% at retail? A standard Vinomofo method, but this time at Winestar?

Apparently there is a bit of a glut of Shiraz out there and it's a tough sell, let alone a new $100 wine from not that old vines. When the maker has better pedigreed wines for $95 RRP?
The wine is probably pretty good value at $20, that doesn't mean it deserves a possibly fake $100 RRP.

Sorry, did I mention I'm a bit of a cynic when it comes to current era wine deals involving massive discounts?

Some valid points. he might be going in the Hewitson / VM direction. No use of new oak is a little meh.

Each to their own.
Without distracting too much from deal nature of thread, probably my fave red wine blind tasted is Torbreck RunRig. From their tasting notes: "30 months on new (50%), second fill and third fill French oak barriques." It's sublime.

Torbreck also has a wine called Descendent. They position it like RunRig's little bro, stating things like "20 months in second fill French oak barriques, previously used for RunRig."

My hopes were elevated by this genius marketing, but upon tasting I found Descendent more like a distant cousin than a little bro!

Two deals from DM, but could be store or stalk specific?

Torbeck The Struie, $38.65 when in six, nets down further to around $35 with JULY30 (but don't order exactly 6 as you pay more for 6 then it should be?!). Click and collect at DM Prahran in Vic was the only one I could find in Melbourne.

Head The Brunette, $43.30 when in six, nets down further with code. Seems to be available at more high end stores only.
