Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

There's an article in the Herald Sun (paywall) today talking about the oversupply of red wine in Australia, with stalling demand. De Bortoli ripping out old red vines, etc.

Bad for wineries, but should lead to some amazing specials the next few years...

Same story every year. Must be very easy to be a 'journalist'.

There are literally posts from 10 years ago on this forum talking about "the wine glut". While I'm sure reduced wine drinking/oversupply is putting downward pressure on prices, I don't think there will be amazing discounts over the next year that are greater than what we've seen on this thread over the last year.

I've been buying and drinking red wine for nearly 60 years. Before the advent of the Trade Practices Act (1974) just about the only way to get any significant discount on wine was to visit the licenced establishments (grocers, wine stores, hotels) soon after they were sold and changed hands and offer to take old stock off their hands. I was lucky to be in Canberra when Farmer Brothers kicked off the liquor/wine discounting business mode as the TPA was implemented.

The first big glut I remember was in the early 80's when the SA Government sponsored (paid for) vine pulls and Shiraz Muffins were a thing. I reckon that since then, with varying cycles, there has been a wine glut of significant proportions for at least half the time and more frequently and pronounced over the last 20 years, maybe more.

Memory is fading, but I started a site dedicated to finding and documenting wine bargains in about 2003, continued as a non-interactive blog until 2010 when it turned into an interactive Forum. The depth of discounting varies according to producer and retailer desperation and has been perverted in recent years (the Vinomofo era) by the annoying "high-RRP/sell low" brigade, but the bargains are always there to be found and will be for many years to come. You just have to be more careful these days.

So same price as Michael's post about vintage cellars - but may be of use to those of us with no VC nearby.
