For many, Châteauneuf is the greatest appellation in
Southern Rhône, and what makes it so unique is the terroir...
it's like none other.

An unforgiving 'moon-scape' of smooth, glacial stones (or galets as they're known) that line the steep hillside six inches thick. And from what looks like a barren wasteland, spring these vines. Seemingly immune to the violent conditions the fierce mistral brings, the roots dig deep into the mountain, tapping into moisture kept insulated from the harsh climate above.

Patrick Lesec is a highly esteemed negociant who has sourced the fruit for "Les Galets Blonds" from the iconic La Crau vineyard.
Using non-interventionist winemaking principles, he blends the juice from 100 year old vines (Grenache 93% and Shiraz 7%) on these sparse, boulder-covered soils. Interestingly, the galets also play a fundamental role to the ripening of the grapes during summer. They not only insulate the soil from evaporation, but store the sun's energy during the day, and then radiate the heat throughout the night, limiting the the change in temperature...naturally ripening the fruit. Ingenious!

Rockford Black is quite variable, sometimes bretty, has had batches of poor corks in the past, like Basket Press I regard it as being of poor value now and for the past 5 years or more as the annual price increases despite vintage variations are not accompanied by commensurate quality.

Interesting that some of those Colonial Estate wines are actually ok. Totally agree on the Rockford though.

Way back when the discount/clearance wines started to be a thing, I bought a lot of Colonial Estate. They were very good value, made properly but none wanted to pay the big prices for an unknown brand. Wish I had kept a couple.

Agree re both Bleasdale & Rockford.

I think Lehmann's Black Queen is the best Barossan offering, but for value it's hard to go past Seppelts Sparkling Shiraz for circa $20, and even cheaper on special.

Shiraz for about $27, Cab Sav 2018 for about $23 and Cab Sav 2017 for about $20 all delivered.

Now tired them all and I think they are genuine bargains. Very old school massive oaky plummy wines but well supported by the fruit and very well made wines. Originally sold for $90-$100 a bottle Cimicky Blackmoor Cabernet Sauvignon

The absolute stand out for me was the Cimicky Cab Sav 2018. The others are very good too.
