Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Touted as "Yarra Valley meets Right Bank Bordeaux", today's Secret Wine lies in the Coldstream subregion of the Yarra Valley with neighbours such as Mount Mary, Yeringberg and Yarra Yering...to name a few.

Ready to drink now, or put away for the next 20++ years, here comes...Secret Wine # 543

"This is gracefully elegant with sophistication and complexity; the enticing bouquet shows dark berry, dried herb, smoked game and cedary oak characters, leading to a gorgeously layered palate offering rich fruit intensity with savoury nuances backed by seamlessly melded tannins. Seductive and satisfying with finesse and a great line and length." 96 Points Sam Kim

"A blend of 55.6/24.8/19.6% merlot/cabernet franc/cabernet sauvignon. Destemmed with 4 weeks on skins and matured in French oak (20% new) for 19 months. A deep, vibrant, crimson purple. Impressive from the outset, with aromas of black plums, dark cherries, blackberries, cedar and fresh vanilla bean. Unctuously flavoured, yet very well balanced, there is a core of perfectly ripened dark fruits and this finishes long and seductive with very fine and persistent tannins. Good now and in the medium term." 95 Points James Halliday (Philip Rich)

"An exquisite Yarra Valley red here which delivers plenty of understated power, complexity and balance. Mid but not deep ruby, this is a wine that does not put all of its cards on the table straight away releasing its many charms over an hour or two. It starts with pure red and dark berry fruits before crushed violets and cedar complexity slowly energy with a veneer of French oak, all with a youthful freshness. The palate then shows delightful elegance and softness of texture making it very approachable although there is also a firm seam of tannin providing structure which supports a long and fleshy finish. It’s a delicious expression of Yarra Valley Cabernet that, while already drinkable, certainly has the stuffing to also age well." 95 Points Angus Hughson

Hey, I just had a look on Halliday and found it immediately: The Compass Cabernet Blend 2019 - Warramunda Estate
Agreed it looks like a decent buy but I’m not familiar with the winery, so keen for some thoughts
I bought their 2018 Cabernets from VM a couple of years ago - was very happy wth it for $20. Not sure that The Compass is worth what JD is asking, but this complex style always appeals to me. If you do buy. it would be good to hear what you think of it...

It’s been a while as they say in the classics but I’ve got some valid excuses, finally picking up on a few threads after some time away, had the usual JD Cellars rigmarole in my inbox today for a 2020 Shiraz “First time offered blah blah blah“ with the usual Sam Kim waffle but unusually couldn’t nail it with a search using the review, $70 down to $15, possibly cough but piqued my interest….
Secret Wine # 542

The Sam Kim note is shown in the Reviews and Awards.

Whose opinion do you give more credence to out of the other two ctitics?

I don't really follow either of them closely enough to be confident. I thought Ray Jordan was more of a WA wine specialist known for positive reviews and perhaps elevated scores there, but he seems to be spreading his wings as a Wine Pilot.

La Boheme Cuvee blanc $7, it is on clearance in LL (sydney western suburb). I visited 3 stores tonight and all of them having this on clearance. After knowing the average review is 3.5 in vivino, I only take 2 bottles.

Has anyone been to the Langtons clearance before, any tips?

I must resist the urge to head over to Langton's today - I did the wine equivalent of a status run on Cellar Door last night to get to Bunch status, so don't need any more! I imagine it'll be like most wine warehouse sales: the true bargains will walk out the door fairly quickly after 9AM leaving the dregs behind by midday.

Langtons are having a warehouse sale 25th march from 9-4pm at Hoppers crossing. It will then go online for 48 hours from Sunday. More info next week.
@year of the roo Do you have any idea what will be on sale online tomorrow? As a Sydney guy I won't be able to join the warehouse sale today. Will the sale be arranged at their Carpe Diem website? Thanks.

I'm just back from the warehouse... I think it's not crazy bargain. Seems ok to me. There are a few interesting wines with decent price.
Packs are good value I think.

There is a also astralis vertical plus decanter

I agree - the 2018 Cabernets was really excellent value. I got some and then went back for some for the cellar and friends. But $62 is pretty pricey at the mo, even for what may well be a really tasty wine.
