Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I had a 2003 389 recently and it was sensational. I hope I'm still around, with all faculties in order, to enjoy the 2018s I bought recently when they'll be at their peak.

The mid 90s are still drinking well according to penfolds cellar door and should for some time yet.

Just had this come through from BoozeBud. Others might know more than me, but I'd guess it another case of inflated RRP.

Edit: looks like the link goes to GWD

A lot of those second tier wine sellers are like the Persian rug sellers of yore.

'Tame Winemaker's RRP is $200, and at their cellar door it's $175, but through Super Discount Wines, we've made a scoop buy and normally sell it for $75, but for you as a Black Friday special for loyal customers, we have it for $40 a bottle in any six. And don't forget the coupon code SAVEBIG to take 75 per cent off your order price.'

I note a couple of Canberra BWS stores have Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay and Grosset Polish Hill on sale - $77.50 and $44.50 a bottle respectively (less in a 6/with gift cards). They might be available elsewhere too?

GWD = ignore for me.
After a lengthy and nasty email exchange with Tony Sells many years ago I vowed never to buy from GWD again. But he's either long gone now or hiding in some associated entity so I recently dipped into a mixed case of some of their own-label lines like Normans, Colonial Estate, Songlines etc.
I haven't gotten too far into the mix yet, but have tried the Normans Regional Series Grampians Shiraz 2021 which scored 96 pts and top Victorian Shiraz in this years Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Challenge Results | 2022 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge It's listed at $35 there, was $99/12 at GWD and at that price it's a sound but unexciting medium-weight wine.

Also tried is the Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Sparkling Shiraz NV that was not disgraced in two single-blind flights of 6 Sparkling reds at prices up to $60, surprisingly good for the $11 I paid, good fruit, good mid-palate weight, nice touch of oak, restrained sweetness,

I don't buy much from Boozebud, find their site dreadful and really only buy the occasional Corryvreckan on eBay when it's 20% off. And GWD marketing style is still off-putting, but there may be some wines there that are worth a try.

Yeah I saw your recommendation for the SS on your site, given the dearth of reasonably priced (and reasonable generally) SS currently I might be tempted by this as a one time only purchase.

I bought the Colonial Estate on eBay with a code to get to just under $11 delivered, now $11.99 + freight at GWD The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Nv | Buy Wines online Australia wide | Premium Wines direct

I've also tried the Raptor Birds of Prey from Gt Western Raptor Bird Of Prey Great Western Sparkling Shiraz Nv | Get Wines Direct, this is a bright young thing, with more red fruits and dark cherries than the plummy goodness of the Colonial estate. But still a reasonable summer BBQ drink at $8.99.

Thanks! Nice tip. I don't usually pay so much for whites but couldn't resist a couple of half price grossets for the cellar. I got some 2019s last year for less but that was a rare thing and am hoping these are a different year. Oh, the joys of a treasure hunt!

I grabbed a couple of Grossets. Mine were 2022 - Mike Bennie gave it a 95 and Gary Walsh gave it a 96, so sounds like a good vintage!
