Wondering if anyone here has tried the Maverick Trial Hill Shiraz, either 2016 or 2018. I'm contemplating a six pack but not sure it isn't one of those merely ok wines with silly rrp that no-one actually pays (though it does genuinely seem to be on offer through WS and elsewhere for $180).

Save me someone!

I have also seen this email hitting my inbox and having purchased this wine in the past few months, went to check what vintage that I have.

it is 2018 vintage. Please note the cork enclosure. I could not believe that for $180 RRP wine they could not afford to seal it properly with wax or at least with some metal foil tight wrap. (see the pics).

At the time of the purchase myself and a mate got a dozen to split as Winestar charges (or used to charge) postage and $10 surcharge if bought less than a dozen .

Also worth to note that we paid $32.99 per bottle at the time.

My impressions - it is a very good well made wine however I am not sure if $180 can be justified as its price. We thought for $33 it was a good buy. For $40, hmmm - I would probably wait for DM to offer Sorby Adams The Thing for $50 as that would be $10 well worth the upgrade.

I think Maverick is one of those wine brands in Au that definitely inflate RRP. When I was doing my due diligence before I purchased it I noticed that my fellow countrymen Moscowvites are paying around AUD $364 in a Moscow online store. Also Redbigot said that couple of folks on his forum reported good things about it.

Now to the quality of wine. It is not a fruit driven/front fruited wine as you would expect of a Barossa region, it is more on a savoury side. It really really needs to breathe to reach its full potential. I noticed that after 2-3 hours decanting you start getting some exquisite subtle dark fruit and a pleasure to drink. It is slightly more acidic(from memory) than I would ideally prefer but it works well to counter the tannins and has a nice long finish.

I am a bit hesitant to recommend savoury wines (Clarendon Hills Merlot 2012 IMHO is a superb drop but requires patience decanting - and some people thought it was horrible) - they really need to be well aired.

So I would recommend it if you are really after some descent Eden valley shiraz, right now (if you can wait - add $10 and hunt for Sorby Adams The Thing). I would not recommend it on the basis of the magnitude of the discount from its RRP that seems for some folks to be the major factor when choosing wine (that is skillfully being exploited by some enterprising labels)!

I might crack a bottle tonite now!

Thanks. Not completely dissuaded but probs won't now. I've had plenty of savoury shirazes recently that have needed a solid breathe.

I thought I saw some Sorby Thing offered as a mystery wine the other day. I wonder where that was. I only look at WS, TWC and DM really.

Something a bit different in this offering from Cellar One.

2013 Grant Burge Holy Trinity GSM MAGNUM. $78 (including free postage).

Customer Login

‘The Holy Trinity is a traditional blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. The fruit for this wine is 100% Barossa grown, predominantly handpicked from old, dry-grown vines which range from 50 to 120 years old. The 2013 vintage provided exceptional conditions throughout the entire growing season. A cool dry winter continued to a dry spring and summer, leading to lower than average yields. On the positive, low yielding vineyards led to some sensational quality, particularly in the reds showing great colour and mighty structures. This release is a blend of 57% Grenache, 30% Shiraz and 13% Mourvèdre.

The 2013 The Holy Trinity is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured GSM that continues the long and lauded heritage for this traditional blend in the Barossa Valley. The nose is awash with ripe plums, Christmas pudding and liqueur cherries with sweet spices and a hint of some more savoury, earthy notes that add to the complexity. The palate is rich and juicy with vibrant flavours of fresh plums and berries, chai tea and fruitcake, with fine tannins that run the length of the palate. The dense, mouth-filling mid palate and long, textural finish combine to create a wine that is rich and elegant, sweet and savoury, and will sit beautifully on any table now, or cellar gracefully for the future.

Perfect for gifting in this beautiful presentation box!’

They won't deliver these to my address...
It is available for the delivery to a Parcel Collect in SA - from there it can be redirected to a Parcel collect near you for a cost of $5. A bit of dicking around but it is completely doable. The method is outlined earlier in this thread.

Please note - I needed to select $15 delivery, it won't allow for a standard delivery for some reason.

I won't be buying it, I have had 2008 just recently (3-4 weeks ago) and it wasn't my cup of tea for some reason, however other people absolutely loved it.

Just wanted to pass on this nugget of information I received today in my inbox from Firefox security (considering how many members use Shopback on the forum I thought it might be worth posting). This came from https://haveibeenpwned.com/ my account came back as having been "pwnd" :(

ShopBack: In September 2020, the cashback reward program ShopBack suffered a data breach. The incident exposed over 20 million unique email addresses along with names, phone numbers, country of residence and passwords stored as salted SHA-1 hashes. The data was provided to HIBP by dehashed.com.

Compromised data: Email addresses, Geographic locations, Names, Passwords, Phone numbers
