Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Dropped by two DMs to collect WB bundles. A 2013 black from one and a 2016 from the other.

Very approachable. Smoother than I expected at such a young age (relatively). That’s about as much wine w*nker language as I know.

The other 14 will certainly enjoy a good lie down.

It’s got another ten years at least - in my totally amateur opinion.

Opened the same vintage last night, classic GL.
They will go strait to the quaffer section joining all the Wynns BL 2016 I got through Cellarmasters couple of years ago also < $10. Both are nice enough to open anytime and impressive labels to open at dinner with friends who don’t care much about wine but will appreciate the gesture of bringing “$40” wine ;)

'16 Black label into the "quaffer" section? Because of the price range you paid or quality of the wine? How long would you cellar it for?

Sorry it was typo, I meant Wynns BL.

Btw Wynns BL has 10+ years cellar potential and will become much better with age so for me I’ll open them young only because of the price paid and when I run out of the older vintages.

It's an interesting question isn't it. I just had the same discussion with my wife about half a dozen leeuwin prelude I paid $5 each for. Do we treat them as quaffers given they cost very little and I can't store them anyway. Or should we treat them as the $30 bottles they should have been?

Depends what’s your other quaffer options in the cellar?

I had similar debate with +1 about which wine to use for cooking. Lately I’ve used Reynella Cellar Release 2015 simply because it was the cheapest one I have (got few cases from Cellarmasters for $5) and happens to be suitable for the type of dishes that require dry red.

ah, ok that makes a difference. I've got 3 x 2010 left and then onto some 2012s (Wynns BL). Also have 2 x Brands Blockers 2010 left as well which is drinking well.

....and now I note you did mention Wynns BL (maybe I should only read these in the day before I ave a glass in my hand)

How is it? May open one tonight.
I tried a '16, must say I was expecting something more, but I suspect they need to lie down for a few years yet. At $9/bottle they could go in the quaffer pile but that would be a waste. The problem now is that all the wine I have been buying lately is (should be) more premium and there's no quaffers left. With dry(ish) July they'll get a couple of extra weeks to mature I guess ;-)

Have to agree. It's okay but not impressive. The concern, a slightly astringent note makes me dubious about further improvement. Doesn't seem to have fruit quality to carry.

I opened a WB Grey Label tonight - very happy with it. Drinking well with a good 5 years cellar potential easily. Nice balance. Probably worth the RRP for a change let alone the actual cost. This is better than a quaffer IMO.
Will put the other 5 + the Black Label away for a while. Will try another Grey Label in 6-9 months and see how the rest develop.
Great deal.
