Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

So, I just had to go back to Dan's at Canberra Airport for one last price match... and voila! (I almost asked for the WB plat that was sitting there as well but the docket I'd grabbed off this forum had no date and I decided not to push my luck...)

But Halliday only gave the 2017 Quintet 95pts, so that's a 90? 🤔

As we all know, wine is such a subjective thing.

Your comment about a mere 92 points, like that's a poor rating. I think that's exactly a reflection of the ridiculous points inflation that goes on with Australian wine reviewers. 92 is considered an excellent/outstanding wine and about where I'd expect that wine to fall (I've not had it myself). A quick look on CellarTracker confirms this, so my general rule, IMHO, that Halliday scores need about 5 points knocked off stands.
Tricky business cellartracker. So, the 2012 quintet (JH97, CM 96) gets 91 from six winetracker community ratings, while the 2017 (WF 97, NS 96, JH 95) gets 94 from 2...

I agree aussie ratings have gone up in an arm's race over the last 20yrs. But I think they're all doing it, so can you really get to a 'true' rating by knocking a consistent five off someone? Or are you saying you'll knock something off everyone, but more off Halliday?

Give me a blind tasting any day!

My comment was specifically about Halliday.

However, I really don't pay too much attention to scores dolled out by wine professionals. I'm more interested in the tasting notes that tell me something useful about the wine. I think it's a little crazy how people just chase the scores and that's how they decide what they will drink. No wonder these reviewers are incentivised to inflate scores.

As soon as a winey or wine seller starts telling me about scores I switch off. I literally had TWE call me a couple of hours ago telling me about some wine the Hooke and Halliday gave 97 points to. Also she mentioned it won a bronze medal at some wine show. So in a blind tasting it only scored a brone yet when it was known to the reviewers who are paid who knows how much by TWE it received a 97. Says it all really.

Again...this is all just my opinion. There is no wrong and right.

Not Really Deals related - But I went to the Granite Belt this weekend in Queensland & was blown away by just how great the wine was up that way - In particular the Wines at Symphony Hill - If you are local - do yourself a favour and drive up for a day or a weekend.
I have to agree! We went to the Ballandeen area for our last holiday (2hr from our home in Toowoomba, we stayed at MJ'S YURTS) just after the fires around Stanthorpe. We were literally some of the only tourists in the area. I wasnt expecting much at all from the Granite Belt as it was so far removed from the SA/WA wines that I enjoy. Although we were paying cellar door prices, there were some nice finds. Also they had had some horrible times of late with drought, having to buy in the majority of water just to keep the vines alive,, but the 2018 vintage was given a 10/10 from Halliday. The Merlot and Malbec were quite different, quite big and rich and enjoyable. Highlights would have been.

2018 Golden Grove Estate Durif
2018 Rumbalara Merlot
2018 Bungawarra Malbec LJR
2013 Granite Ridge Petit Verdot (we found a few hidden away at Stanthorpe Cheese)
2016 Ballandeen Estate 'Messing About' Saperavi
2014 Ballanden Estate 'Generation 3'

Ballandeen Estate give a nice winery tour for pretty much nothing, and the Stanthorpe Museum was another highlight. Oh, and a little pizza shop called The Pizza Place got better reviews from us then the resturants :) I feel another trip coming on.

That means DM didn’t verify the price after your first purchase, you got lucky! I tried similar thing in Melbourne last week calling the next day to reserve some more of the 2017 but they already contacted VC...

I'm totally with you on the value of blind tasting and the distortion caused, or apparently caused, by $$ being paid to critics.

I never buy off scores alone, and will always get other info where possible. But I do find them useful to some degree. How about this - have you ever liked a wine that both Halliday scored 89 or less? I bet if you have it's not often!

(And boring as scoring may be I'm very interested know what that wine was that got 97 from both Hooke and Halliday but showed poorly. Fascinating...)

Have they run out of the stuff yet? I'm about to head off to Dan's Phillip and see if they will price match Quintets with your receipts. If that fails then I might head off to the airport tomorrow to try my luck again.

I'll see if I can dig up the WB Plat receipt, I don't know if I've got rid of it already fingers crossed.

Was the 2013 Wynns John Riddoch IIRC. A bronze medal isn't exactly showing poorly, but a bronze does not equate to a wine score in the high 90s!

Airport is out of Quintets. Some in belco but they were steadfast about not price matching. Good luck!

If there's any chance of you getting an extra plat, I'd buy it off you! Happy to sweeten the deal with some extra for your troubles.

Pls do report back on how you go...

Yum, John Riddoch. Out of my usual price range. I got some '98 way back when they halved the price to $48 to reposition the label. Seems to have crept back up again (and getting bronzes...).

I just popped in to Liquorland on my way out of Coles. They had Tandem Ars in Vitro for $3, have never had a Tempranillo merlot before, so grabbed one of those, plus a Punt Road Downtown Pinot for $5. The guy at the counter scanned them and just raised his eyebrows when it was $8 for both...they also had Bannockburn Chardonnay and Leeuwin Estate in stock, might search the thread for dockets...

No go at Phillip Dan. They said they don't have stock then played dumb when I had a go asking them if they could price match it with the 2006 that they have in stock. Nothing there on clearance either.

Bad luck. When I say they had no quintet at Airport, they did still have one plat, several octaviuses and some nebu, all of which we have receipts and stickers for a match (attached). And they have been nice about matching so far. So if you want any of those and you go and succeed, I'd gladly take the plat if you get it. Would pay handsomely!

Technically if they already agreed to price match the vintage makes no difference since the VC tag doesn’t mention specific vintage. From my experience so far some DM stores are easy while other wouldn’t match cellar release under any circumstances. It’s a hit and miss depends on which staff member works on the day.
