Pinot noir is the grape that is least likely to be decent quality if a cheap price.

It's a tricky proposition even at higher prices, so at lower prices, you're better off making your savings via easy to grow stuff like Chardonnay or South Australian Shiraz. And pay up when you need a good pinot noir.

Agree with everything you said apart from the Chardonnay bit. Maybe other white grapes such as Pinot Gris/Grigio or Sav Blanc but it would be extremely hard to get quality Chardonnay at these price levels, even after discounts.

That is certainly my thoughts.
Had a 2013 Terra Sancta SlapJack Block paired with pizza on Friday which was sensational...followed by a 2019 Super nanny goat paired with peking duck pancakes on Saturday - also equally amazing.
Being lockdown and the state of the world, I figured I might as well crack the good s@$t and eat well 😂

So does anyone here think 2016 The Thing at $60 is worth a pop? How does it compare to other premium Shirazes and Cabs we see reduced to that price from time to time?

I generally don't stretch to that price range except for excellent wines heavily discounted (eg Mount Mary and Octavius last yr, 389s for long keeping).

Plenty written about this wine in previous posts, including from me.

Buy at $50.

Chalkboard Central Otago Pinot on clearance again $5 each in my local FC. 2018 vintage for anyone interested, should be the same across VIC, although you can't find it online.
Not drinkable IMO. If you really want a budget red wine then some of the Wolf Blass or de Bortoli variants are more bearable. I would also stay away from PN under $20

Might have to start an eight bucks or less best quality bottle contest....the winner would certainly come from a grays on line, but seeing how this is the DM thread it will not count.

I did grab some of those $6 2013 clearskin Serafino wines, I gave a few to a work colleague who loved it. I really enjoyed a bottle with a few friends aswell. I rarely buy in that price range, but I was very happy with my purchase.

$5 Wynn’s CSM is my pick.
Now, this being the essendon jumper's red slashed wine, how did you land it for a fiver...this wine, the 1980 or 1981 vintage is in my top tens ever. Used to buy it at Coles for $1.99,and back then, a mate and I drove to about 6 stores and cleaned them out. It was instrumental in me loving the stuff over the next forty years. I also met John Wade, all five foot four, hard to miss, chief Wynn's winemaker when he came to buy some panadol off me. He was boozing at the annual Jimmy Watson results time in September at JW wine Bar next door. Fun memorable times.

So five bucks. Nice.

Happened to pop into Liquorland for a look when I'd gone into Coles last year. Saw it for $5 so grabbed six. Luckily the pram has a decent basket on it as I had to walk home.

Got this text from TWC...

I’m intrigued and snapped up a couple. Gets pretty good reviews and 2016 is the year I am collecting a fair bit of wine from as it’s the year of my daughters birth. Anyone had this before?

We are in the BIG LEAGUES of Coonawarra. Normally $85, the Brand & Sons Family Reserve Cabernet is now $35/btl, TONIGHT ONLY. 96 Pts, 2 x Trophies, 5 x Golds & 30+ years of cellaring, this is a MUST BUY. Use code SONS50 at checkout. Secure now >> twc-wine.com.au/uIymQ1I

2016 Brand & Sons BSB Cabernets, Coonawarra, A$95
A big-bodied, firm-tannined red which calls for cellar-time. Blended from cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot, it has violet, berry and dried-herb aromas, and a trace of mint. A chocolate flavour joins in on the palate. A very smart blend indeed.

This is the actual (94 pt) JH review, incidentally listed as $125 price

A Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. It's always a worry these days with the Chinese obsession for the best wine, new oak a (relatively) quick answer. I'm not suggesting that Jim Brand Wines is involved in that pattern of behaviour, but there is a lot of oak in this wine.

Weird that he seems to give it somewhat of a ‘scathing’ review around the oak, yet still gives it 94 points...or am I misinterpreting??

Wine writers can say a lot with one word. AndrewGraham is my favourite. But many good ones are out there. Reading between the lines the JH review infers it is not in its good drinking range relative to the price. It seems to pre warn to lower your expectations. Maybe in five years time it might have got a 96 all things being equal. The opening gambit is self explanatory. It needs to settle. This can be due to imbalance, too much acid, too much time on oak, and what type and newness. JIMMYS old winery I assume is trying its best probably using brand new two grand barrels mean you have to somehow justify the price dont you-

Wine writers like car salesman are usually more diplomatic than truthful. Obviously this wine is good enough but it's not seamless. Reminds me if bib big ones like Anvers in that huge thick heavy bottle. Just too nearly under a teenagers years. Many other wines in 2016 are going to be stunners at the onset, just not the Brands.

Wynns BL CS price drop at Boozebud to 29.99

Best bud - 10% and free shipping
SB 25% (cap 30$, both for new BB customers only)

Can get 4 down to $20.6 / bottle, or $23 for 6 pack

I can't see vintage. So only caution is this may well be 2017 - so if you're OK with that crack on. If anyone figures out vintage please let me know! Will jump on if 15/16/18
