We are in DFW for 5 hours so need to clear immigration and then get to Dealey Plaza for a tour of the book Depository. Always wanted to do this.

Any ideas? Hire a car? Catch a cab?

Hitches or alternatives?

Thanks

I'd suggest hiring a car. It will be cheaper than taxis to town and back. Generally it's pretty easy to go through immigration at DFW, so it shouldn't take all that long.

When you leave the airport, take the southern exit and head east along the interstate. There's an off-ramp just near Dealey plaza and there's a public carpark quite close to the Depository. You should do the trip in 30 minutes.

You buy your ticket downstairs and then go up to the Sixth Floor. They give you an audio guide and you take yourself around. It is very well done. Various displays cover the different theories of the killing and its investigation. The area around "that window" is set up just like it was on 22 November 1963, though it has a glass barrier around it. You can look out of an adjoining window, to get an idea of Oswald's view. Gift shop at the end (of course).

Then walk out into the plaza and look at the memorial, and the X that is painted on the roadway at the approximate location where Kennedy was shot.

A few blocks away, there's also an official JFK memorial, which is comprised of rather dull concrete blocks in a geometric pattern. Don't go out of your way to see it.

Agree with JohnPhelan; I did this very thing earlier this year (7 hour layover at DFW): http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ahamas-atlantis-nassau-62992.html#post1117507

I hired a car - the hire car lot is one of those waaaay-away-from-the-airport affairs but its modern and very well set up, along with the bus shuttle. I had a clear run and it took me about 40 minutes to drive on the freeway.

I was surprised at being able to get a park in a street level lot within two blocks - very easy but that was on a weekend. Just coins in a machine.

There are freeway works underway as you exit downtown on the route back to the airport; beware following GPS guidance blindly (like I did :( )

I also visited Grapevine Mills Mall on the recommendation of people here. With 5 hrs it might be tight-ish to do it.

We visited the massive Grapevine complex, could not get Mrs Lime out of there, bought yet another suitcase for 1/3 price, toys for grandkids and a beautiful white (real kid leather jacket) for her ladyship for $99!.
