Crikey reporting Jetstar grounded 6 aircraft-flight chaos

Hmmm, sounds to me like crikey blew this out of proportion.

Thanks for the update Jetstar News.

And what do Tiger and Jetstar have in common (besides the obvious)?

John Holland

Dosen't Virgin use them aswell?

Exactly my point. There is a big difference between maintenance (whether scheduled or unscheduled) and a grounding. Big difference. You don't just ground an aircraft for hours - you do it for at least days. And the fact they were "missed"? We don't have enough information to establish that, and Ben doesn't have enough to actually prove that these inspections/procedures/checks/maintenance requirements were "missed" (or overlooked, or whatever synonym). If there's anything that JQ could be guilty of then it would be inadequate management of the aircraft around the network to ensure that these 2 flights were not cancelled. However, if the aircraft required maintenance for an incident that could not be reasonably predicted (i.e. it "just happened", not that these aircraft were scheduled for a maintenance check), then I would say there is no guilt and the cancellation of 2 flights is unfortunate.

We don't know for sure that this was a last moment thing, they could have been planning this for a week or so. We wouldn't hear about it, until aircraft are pulled out of service.

The fact they lost 4 aircraft, and only 4 sectors were cancelled. Sounds to me as if they knew about it for a while, adjusted their network for the loss of the aircraft, and only had to stop a few services.

I would call this nothing more than routine. Aircraft get pulled offline all the time for maintenance , it's part of the aviation industry, anybody suggesting it's anything more than that is trying to tarnish the airline.

The Crikey story has been updated with the Jetstar statement that has already been posted here.
Probably time to add the usual line from South Park.
"Move along people nothing to see here.'

The Crikey story has been updated with the Jetstar statement that has already been posted here.

They've just pasted on the statement; that's it. The rest of the post is unaffected, which is still prejudiced without adequate logical argument and/or conclusion. The edit to the post title is even worse.

"Nothing to see here?" Perhaps of journalistic worth......

Yeah when I said 'Updated' I meant 'Added to the article'.

Has made it to The Age

Jetstar says a media report today that it has grounded six Airbus airliners over maintenance issues is incorrect.

In an indication of how jumpy the Australian airline industry is in the wake of the Tiger Airways grounding, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority said it was seeking urgent advice from Jetstar over the report.

CASA have released a short statement and that has also been added to the Crikey story.
CASA is aware of the issues relating to the maintenance tasks on a number of Jetstar A320 aircraft. Jetstar have kept CASA fully informed. CASA does not believe that there were any serious safety issues caused by the need to complete the tasks overnight. However, CASA will be looking carefully at Jetstar’s actions and checking to ensure Jetstar’s maintenance systems are robust and operating correctly.

CASA will take any appropriate actions, if required. It should be noted CASA has not ordered the grounding of any Jetstar aircraft.

Doesn't seem like CASA are overly concerned.

As always everything must be taken with a pinch of salt and multiple 'sauces' (sources) :p

Whilst having some obvious bias towards QF I find that the Plane Talking blog outweighs with this with the depth of reporting provided.

My guess is that the "maintenance" issue was more about maintenance reporting than any actual work done or not done. I expect that during a review of recent maintenance records, Jetstar found some paperwork had not been correctly completed and in order to fix the paperwork they had to redo the inspections. Hence it was resolved quickly overnight and hence why CASA want to review the procedures to make sure there is no systemic failure underlying the symptom.

Was also probably a good day to do it.SYD was a shambles on Tuesday and Thursday with extensive delays due to severe wind and only 1 runway operating.I flew home Tuesday and there were 2 or 3 JQ flights cancelled due to the delays.
mrs.dr.ron flew home yesterday.JQ probably felt there were going to be cancellations anyway. There certainly were more than 2 as 2 were on the boards by lunchtime. Then JQ790 to MCY was cancelled and pax transferred to 786 and 788 both of which were nearly 3 hours late.
Although the cynic in me thinks if Crikey had not picked it up JQ would just have mentioned the weather delays.

But wait, there's more....

QANTAS' no-frills subsidiary, Jetstar, has come under the scrutiny of the aviation safety regulator over aircraft maintenance, adding to the sense of crisis in Australian aviation following Tiger Airways' grounding.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will now check the rigour of Jetstar's maintenance systems and processes after finding out planes weren't fully serviced to schedule.

AUSTRALIAN carrier Jetstar grounded four aircraft on Thursday night after missing maintenance inspections.

The A320 aircraft were serviced overnight, forcing the cancellation of two return services on Thursday.

Emergency light batteries on board the aircraft were tested, while hydraulic fluid was sampled and door switches were lubricated.

All aircraft were returned to operation on Friday.

Jetstar has advised the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of the grounding.

"Safety is our number one priority and there was no risk to the safety of the aircraft,'' Jetstar spokeswoman Andrea Wait said, adding that she not know where the four aircraft were grounded.

A CASA spokesman said the aviation watchdog would check to ensure that Jetstar's maintenance systems are robust.

Umm....that isn't a A320!

It's not even an Airbus.:!: generally I don't subscribe to the "Anti QF group bias at News Ltd" theory but if you are going to run
a story about grounding of A320's you could at least spend the 20 secs it takes to do a web search for a Jetstar A320.
Poor form.

Well one of my pet bugbear has come up again. It doesn't claim that picture is an A320. Just a random photo of a jetstar aircraft. It might be nice if the picture matched the story but since they don't actually say it's an A320, I don't see a major issue.

And to give them credit it must have been hard to find a picture of a JQ aircraft that wasn't an airbus!:D

Virgin were just on TEN news tonight centered around the issues they had with their 777 being grounded for a couple of days. Usually Virgin sails under the radar with everything!!

Waiting for the Qantas leaky tap almost killed me story!
