Rather interesting read here and some other articles:

New South Wales aiming to steal 2015 World Cup final from the MCG | Herald Sun

So ANZ stadium wants to host the Cricket World Cup final in 2015. This is despite the MCG being a larger ground and actually a cricket ground.

Now I am a parochial Melbournian, and I really believe it is the sporting capital of Australia. I say this from being in involved in nearly every major sporting event in the last 12 years in the country. Melbourne draws larger crowds consistently (look at the tennis - nearly 700,000 came, including 80,000 in one day) than Sydney. Most of our major venues are walking distance from the CBD as well.

What are your thoughts? Should Sydney host it at ANZ (not the SCG), or is the MCG the right place to have it?

We will see tonight.
About to head out to ANZ for the Australia v India T20 - hoping the rain stays aways (so far looking good)
(Am an ANZ and SCG member)

Given the capacity issues I suspect cricket will go to Melbourne in any event.
As for the Football (Soccer) World Cup - different story given the ability of ANZ to move in the sides.

I don't think we will ever have to worry about grounds for the Soccer World Cup...

Agree that soccer/football shouldn't be played in an oval shaped stadium as its just too big a gap on the sides.

Standard NSW Events practice to try to steal an event (tennis, F1, etc) rather than do the hard yakka and create their own. ;)

Very true.. thing with the F1 is that is Melbourne give it up, it will never make it to NSW.. Other cities are waving far too much money at Bernie..

I think it should go to MCG ... I can't really see any pros for ANZ over MCG.

I'm also heading out to ANZ tonight - second game I'll have been to there (providing we actually get a game tonight).

Yeah, an MCG vote here. Bigger crowd capacity, good size playing arena, better centralised location, and it is a 'Cricket Ground'

I'm sure a final at the Olympic Stadium* would be great, but the MCG would be better for the reasons above (*I guess the MCG is also an Olympic Stadium, no?)

Yep my vote goes to Melbourne as well, the MCG is great for cricket.
Cheers

Surely someone's got to play the Devil's Advocate here?

Not me, as an MCC member, I'd be aghast if it were held anywhere else - for no other reason than the fact that it is historically one of the most significant grounds for the sport (let alone the best-suited for big games - especially once the Southern Stand is redeveloped).

I am a Sydneysider and don't believe any sporting event should be held outside of Sydney ... Except for the cricket world cup final. It would be stupid for it not to be staged at the biggest actual cricket ground in the country.

I don't agree with a lot of the general anti Sydney comments though - we have handled some fairly big sporting events pretty well... Olympics? Also re crowds - I think the largest ever crowd for a rugby match was at ANZ stadium...

Or rugby for that matter. Still fuming about getting platinum A gold front row on the boundary seats to see the Wallabies play at Adelaide oval during a rugby world cup game. Get there to see the pitch set up way out in the middle complete with advertising hoardings, combined with the natural profile of the oval I could only see the players from the waist up. All the important action in rugby takes place on the ground. Absolute joke! Then the typical south australian rent a crowd got all angry when I stood up to be able to actually see the game. WTF, they couldn't see the game and they had no idea what was happening anyway! At least the Ireland game the next night was great from the B seats in the bradman stand.

What was the question again? Oh cricket world cup final. Meh! It's little more than a money grubbing venture that is destroying the pure form of the game.

The crowd was around 107,000 in 1999.

I didn't start the thread as a Sydney bash, but aside from the Olympics and the RWC final, what other major events are there? I only point that as Melbourne has more events regularly than Sydney.

I think there was more at the bledisloe cup in 2000 as I was there.

Just because Mel has more events doesn't mean that it is better at those events - more people watch the tennis in Mel as they have the AUS open and SYD has the Medibank classic?

The biggest sailing event in AUS is the Sydney to Hobart which starts in Sydney...

I wouldn't move many of the major events from the current location as for me it detracts from the history of the event. I will never fathom why this seems to happen so much more in Oz than the UK. I guess silver stone vs brands hatch might be comparable but in general what happens at one location stays that location.

I'm not sure what events you are thinking about, the two that I know that were moved where the F1 as Adelaide had lost it and the bikes that went from Phillip Island to Sydney due to a tobacco sponsorship row, then moved back to The island.

The NSW gov has made calls for the AFL grand final to be played in Sydney (can you imagine the NRL in Melbourne? Even I can't) and made gestures for the tennis and F1.

That's is more what I am talking about - there seems to be a constant debate about where events should be held.

Just host every ICC World Cup in India. That's where the money is anyway.
