If airlines can afford to feed their crews, they can jolly well afford to feed those of us who PAY for the priviledge of allowing them to fly!
Here's some photos of what you could expect to get, as a crew member
CREW MEALS
I'd be happy to share them 50-50 with a companion traveller.

It's about time airlines recognised that passengers ALSO get hungry at meal times, and did something about it!

I suspect that there may be something in the industrial agreements that allow crew some decent meals. Personally, if I had to eat as many airline meals as crew did, I'd want them to be decent as well.

They look like spare meals. Obviously if crew have a choice between spare business or economy meals most would pick business.

I don't begrudge them this in the least.

I believe crew (both technical and cabin) on long-haul flights should be provided business class meals. After all they are flying for business (work). However, the flight should be catered as such so the paying passengers don't miss out while the crew enjoy.

I've seen several crews help themselves to the spare business meals after the service has been completed on a long haul flight. I have no problem with that. I suspect that the airlines over-cater business accordingly.

The 2nd photo in the first set of photos is that of a business jet. Might explain why it looks quite nice (see the table underneath? That's a giveaway).

At many companies, the crew get the left-over business class meals. However, the rule is that the captain and first officer have to eat different things, so that they don't both get brought down by food poisoning.

Be glad they're feeding their crew. They often don't get time to eat between flights on a 4-sector, long working day. Not being fed does cause safety issues.

Airlines do over-cater for business class in most cases (and many for economy as well to an extent). This is generally to ensure the availability of choice, as well as to cater for the last-minute passenger.

Then again... some crew meals, I can confirm you're not missing anything. I've had the misfortune of having them a number of times. Some are worse than the passenger meal.

Havn't you ever seen the Qantas hosties wandering down the isle with a tray with a tea towel over the top?

And smelt the wonderful aroma of something hot and yummy?

Well that's their crew meals. Whether they are leftovers from business, or their own, I do not know. But they definately smell nice!

Neither do I. Having to look after so many people I would want them to be eating something very nice so that they are able treat passengers in a nice way. ;)

Qantas doesn't overcater to provide food for crew - they cater to allow choice. Crew get there own meals and refreshments but can eat from any class once the service is completed.

We get meals in the cassarole dishes like on domestic and tasman service. The meals are rotated every month. There are usually 4 choice for lunch/dinner and 2 for breakfast. Both come with salad/dessert/mini chocolate and cereal respectively, and a bakery item.

There was a time a few years ago when QF tried to remove J class altogether going in and out of CNS on domestic services. For a while they ran an all economy 767 for the evening flight out of SYD and morning flight back.

Anyway, I observed the cabin crew preparing business class standard meals for themselves, so although there was only economy level catering for all the passengers, the crew all had a much much better standard of fare.

So my reckoning is they would be provided with J class meals even for a 3 hour flight like SYD-CNS.

Once when flying SQ in Y, the guy beside me had a vego meal request which mysteriously did not appear on the manifest. The Singapore Girl who he approached offered him something from the crew meal. He refused as he thought that it'd mean the stewardess would go hungry, despite her assurance that it was ok. The aforementioned crew member was obviously so touched by his thoughtfulness that she brought out a collection of non-meat items from both the F and J menus which were suitable for vegetarians. I thought that was really good service. :)

I've seen crew members on SQ eat leftover food items from any class, including a lobster themidor that someone had 'Book the Cook'ed for but subsequently refused in favour of something nicer from the menu.

I have no issue with crew eating whatever is availalbe post meal service from any class.

If people aren't happy with their meal or lack thereof, they should look at flying a serviced airline or business class.

I noticed the same thing on a SYD-PER QF flight a couple of weeks back - A passenger's Vegetarian meal wasn't there (not on the manifest). The FA first checked if there was a spare Veg meal, which there wasn't - The customer was happy to go without but after the service had finished a FA returned with some salad and other vegetarian compatible foods that were definately not from Y catering.

As you said, good service.

Here are a lot more crew meals from one of my favourite websites.

AirlineMeals.net

I sprung a Lufthansa hostie finishing off the caviar on a flight from LAX to FRA a few weeks ago. There were only three people in first, and I was the only one eating caviar, so there was plenty left. She looked a bit concerned that I'd sprung her until I said I'd keep my mouth shut for a second helping.

Hehehe good one. On more than 1 occasions I've got seconds of the caviar (and then some) on LH without springing anyone though. And sometimes the cabins are packed (eg BKK flights). Maybe you should've pressed for more? ;) :D

Similar situation where we had 3 in F on an LH A340. They were just about begging us to have more smoked salmon.

I can't see the OP's point. Some of those crew meals would be as I expect (most of the nice one I notice were ex-Japan). I saw the business (charter?) jet meal as well. I have no issue with them eating as well as us.

I never got it when the thread was started, and I still don't now it has been resurrected. But it did seem a common trait of that particular poster,if you have a look at other threads started by said poster.

Some of those japanese meals look exactly the same as I have had in J on JAL.No problems for me if the crew have the left overs.

I agree. Not sure what the problem is here. The most important people to have had a good meal is the crew. They should be catered by the airline however if they have the same (surprise, surprise) meals as the pax then what's the problem.
The last thing I want at the end of a 12 or 14 hour flight is for the pilots to be distracted due lack of suitable sustenance.
