COVID-19 in Japan and Japanese waters

the 2008 London Olympics

I hope their attention to detail for the rest of their analysis is better than this blooper. In 2008 the Olympics were in Beijing. London had them in 2012.

PS thank you DisruptiveDolphin for your posts. The above is in no way a criticism of your post.

Spending ‘Already Happened’

Yet should the worse-case scenario for Japan eventuate, the economic impact might not be as devastating as feared, according to Capital Economics.

“The key point…is that most of the spending for the Olympics has already happened. Spending during the Games themselves is small, perhaps just 0.2 percent of GDP, and much of this is diverted from spending in other areas of tourism and recreation,” senior Japan economist Marcel Thieliant said in a February 21 report.

The London-based consultancy points to the experience of previous Games such as the 2008 London Olympics. While spending by overseas visitors surged by nearly 18 percent during the event, it slumped to a 21-month low some two months later. Similarly, the 2000 Sydney Olympics had a “negligible” impact on travel spending.

“What’s more, there is little evidence that the ‘feel-good’ effect from the Olympics boosts consumer spending,” Thieliant said, pointing to data from previous Games.
Which is part of why many places no longer want to host the Olympics, with a large reduction in bidding cities. Which is why the 2024 and 2028 games were awarded at the same time and why there is talk about having 2 or 3 permanent hosts on a rotating basis. The cost of the games just isn't worth the benefits the host might get.

If they didn't take the games from Rio during Zika and run typically winter seasonal world events in Doha with 50+C temps, they aren't likely to take the games from Japan over some 'flu like illness' (unfortunately. I'd rather not be within 5 timezones of a large media circus sporting event.)

They seem to be forgetting that if they cancel:
- They have to refund all of the tickets
- They will have to refund the sponsors, and not collect what is still to be paid

That would have to be a massive $ hit.

Fourth death from the Diamond Princess.

Ministry of Health hasn't announced (won't announce?) whether the third was positive for the virus.

A passenger in his 80s on a cruise ship that was confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus died at the destination hospital. This is the fourth cruise ship passenger to die.

The age profile is the same.

The Health Minister told the lower house budget committee that 28 people are exhibiting symptoms such as fever after having been let off the Diamond Princess.

Diamond Princess: 538 people from the Philippines in total, including 7 passengers.

59 have tested positive through February 24.

Two charter planes were sent this morning to take around 400 of them home.

Again, a two-week quarantine is planned upon their return.

The Philippines is my next trip (in 3 weeks). Cases were only 3 (if you believe the numbers) until this news.

The island of Shikoku now has its first case, courtesy of the Diamond Princess. The lady in her 60s insisted on being tested despite repeated insistence that it was not necessary.

Japan now has fifty serious cases by the official count, and is reportedly rethinking its 'limit testing' approach with a view to boosting the denominator. Otherwise it will appear to have higher than average mortality etc.

The Governor of Hokkaido is looking at closing all public schools. Hokkaido currently tops the nationwide count, with a very wide spread.

A major Tokyo advertising firm will have around 5,000 head office staff working from home from today after confirming its first case.

11 new reported cases for Japan all up yesterday.

First one in Nagano Prefecture, a guy who had made business trips to Hokkaido Feb 14-17 and Tokyo Feb 17-19.

From a previous day, three people in Chiba who used the same gym but were unknown to each other. Around 600 people to be monitored there.

@disruptivedolphin Thanks for updating us on all this. Japan is my next trip and this is all very helpful especially as I haven't got time to read the Japanese papers right now.

Niigata Sake no Jin was cancelled, (this is a big sake festival in Niigata) and I'm worried that Craft Sake Week will be similarly affected, which will be unfortunate as this is what I am coming to Japan for.

Some 1,600 public primary and junior high schools throughout Hokkaido are to be asked to shut down temporarily from tomorrow.

Bushiroad, a major Japanese entertainment company, cancelled or postponed all their events from last week through late March. They haven't had any major events planned for that period (most were meet and greet and photo op events with cast from their anime/game/musical proprieties with ~2000 attendees at most). Their next planned major event is a concert at Metlife Dome (~35000 seats) in early May.

The Reiwa Shinsengumi political party, which holds two seats in Japan's 245-seat upper house, has called for Diet sittings to be suspended out of concerns over the risk to handicapped and elderly members. The two Reiwa Shinsengumi members themselves have Lou Gehrig's disease and cerebral palsy.

Three new infections in Chiba.

One a doctor who worked on the Diamond Princess February 12-18.

The other two were Diamond Princess passengers who left the boat on February 20 and 21.

How many positives now from Princess who were allowed to walk off?
