Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Suze2000 I suspect your biggest problem might be Singapore. The government there has thus far been very proactive and Thailand the opposite. If infections in Singapore increase i don't think they will hesitate to block more countries. But it is still a month away so no need to panic just yet.

Philippines has extended travel restrictions to Taiwan. Result: PR, 5J and D2 have cancelled flights. IT is scrubbing all flights from 15 February while to date the response of BR and CI has been more muted: BR has cancelled one return flight today.

As Cambodia already is, Philippines under its current "interesting" President is showing signs of trying to become a client state of mainland China.

Apparently Philippines (shame!) has a 'one China policy.' So this move isn't based on an assessment of health policy.

Are there other nations that have restricted travel in from locations other than mainland China. Hong Kong SAR and Macau? Very hard to keep up with this.

All work related travels (domestic and international) have been cancelled until further notice, they will review policy end of the month. No self quarantine required yet unless staff have been to China, not sure if I need to self quarantine for 14 days after my (personal) trip to Singapore.
Also unable to find hand sanitiser anywhere 😓
Expensive but smells really good: Aesop | Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash | MYER

Indeed. Bangladesh, Taiwan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Palau, Seychelles, Samoa and Vanuatu.

Here's an SCMP report of Carrie Lam's plea to diplomats not to impose restrictions on travel from HK, where 49 cases now reported.

cheers skip

Airport touch screens must be very high on the bug transfer facility list

At the Changi Airport toilets (I think, or was it MBS?) near the entrance/exit, there's a feedback touchscreen and a message saying the screen is sanitised regularly.

Australia also has a one china policy. So i’m not sure we can draw any firm conclusions between political policy and the handling of the virus.

An Australian couple quarantined on a cruise ship due to the deadly coronavirus kept the party flowing by getting a drone to deliver wine straight to their cabin.

Jan and Dave Binskin, from Queensland, have chronicled their journey of boredom and booze while stranded on the Diamond Princess ship off the coast of Tokyo for the past week.

Master FM has heard from a coworker currently trapped in China that whole towns are like ghost towns and the price of everything is crazily expensive. :(

Hard to see how this will make things much better:

BEIJING -- China expects 160 million people to travel between Tuesday and Feb. 18 as the Lunar New Year holiday season ends, giving the coronavirus outbreak more opportunities to spread just as the rate of new infections has begun to decline.

(...)

Certain provincial and municipal governments have taken such steps as blocking access to highways in a bid to keep infected people out. A senior Transport Ministry official stressed in a news conference Tuesday that local authorities are strictly prohibited from closing expressways or obstructing emergency vehicles.

A further 39 Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers/crew and one quarantine officer confirmed infected, according to Japanese TV just now.

Total up to 174.

To drop into the muddy hype pool for a moment...
I read a very black article ( of questionable integrity) on line about the current body disposal "business" in China.
Even if partially true it was deeply disturbing and depressing .

Another bright mind has been tracking the public reports and speculating on future results.
He proposes that all the info we see is pr fabrication designed to minimise panic.
He also prognosticates a peak and a decline, all fabricated.

I note that todays daily cases graph is looking quite good , I guess we can all relax now and get on with life

Add seat belts, tray tables, seat pockets, head rests, arm rests, toilet door handles, entertainment screen
Basically everywhere your hands would touch.

Some people wipe down surfaces with disinfectant wet wipes. People worry about feet on bulkheads, but who has wiped down seat belt buckles?

Stairway handles or travelators hand holds, in any environment are particularly icky

Possibility the virus can be spread through pipes similar to the SARS virus

Some coronavirus causes diarrhoea - and SARS was spread by super carriers with diarrhoea which caused faecal "plumes" o_O in apartment toilets and spread through other apartments by the wind:eek:.
It is possible that COVID-19 also causes diarrhoea and may then spread via the same method.

The current new cases on cruise ships occurring under quarantine were likely contracted before quarantine was imposed.

China sealed the Hubei provincial borders IIRC on January 23. However millions would have got out before the quarantine was imposed. Add 14 days and its Feb 6.
Within that quarantined area and in other areas in China, movements are limited - factories not opening, streets are relatively empty, people taking escalated hygiene measures. And If sick either go to hospital, or self isolate.

Feb 6 add in another week, and if the chinese quarantine measures are effective we should see a taper off of new cases assuming all cases are reported quickly and not picked up in retrospect. This is separate to the speculation that not all cases are reported within China. Though I suspect that it is not possible with a stretched health system, it is impossible to surveil everyone (50-60 million) with daily temperature readings as is occuring on Christmas Island

It is not clear from all the data when new cases are reported when those people first experienced symptoms.
