Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Big cuts by the Chinese airlines.
China Southern

And Air China

From the footage I saw, it looks like preformed blocks delivered and laid as support for prefab modules delivered to site and bolted and welded together on top of the blocks. No concrete slab.

Yes, not a 'from scratch' design. I wonder what the plans were originally drawn up for?

Our CMO advises that those coming from infectious zones who have a residence here because they are citizens etc should be allowed to self isolate at home. Visitors who would find that difficult due to no residence s

The plans are the same as the Beijing Hospital that was built in 7 days in 2003 to fight SARS.

Evacuation flight QF6032 now en-route WUH-LEA.
According to AJ, cabin crew will remain on upper deck of the aircraft inflight, only going downstairs to be at door stations for takeoff/landing.

I have parents flying to sri lanka in a few days time on Malaysian Airlines via KL.They are flying economy so that is a bit scary and i have bought them masks but i understand it is more about touch and droplets from coughs / sneezes and hence washing hands etc. They werent given a option to cancel flights.

I am flying to Thailand in 4 weeks time on Singapore. But I am flying J (first time), so in a way its a good time to fly J I guess, still airports in sydney, changi and BKK can be the dangerous areas in my travels. I havent been given any options for cancellations and also being 4 weeks away, its probably quite early still as things may have changed alot by then (My feeling is things would have started to wind down by then).

I am more worried for my parents but I know Sri Lanka has stopped all flights / people from china entering the country apparently. Still it can come from other various methods.

Despite all the complaints about QF on this site.... they come to the party when required.

"While the flight has been subsidised by the Government, Mr Joyce said Qantas would cover additional costs including providing domestic flights home to evacuees at the end of the quarantine period."

So the flight is going to LEA and not DRW? I guess easier to quarantine passengers at LEA given so few commercial flighst there each day.

Adelaide couple among the 2000 passengers stuck on a cruise ship in the South China Sea after the Philippines refused them entry

Ports are already stopping cruise ships from berthing - some of the Pacific Islands are stopping cruise ships that left from Australia and nowhere near China.
David Holst - is he the ex-football player?

They arent exactly stuck although one does wonder if other ports will react the same way given that Hong Kong has now been branded as a hot spot by the cruise industry. There are ample supplies of everything for them to have a few sea days.

I have noted comparisons are often undertaken with SARS. Important to note that Chinese completed about 15-20 million outbound trips in 2003. In 2019 the estimated number of trips is about 150-160 million. Inbound, the numbers have probably also increased by an order of magnitude as well.

The world is a very different place in 2020 compared to 2003.

And I suspect there won’t be any price gouging

I watched a video from a Wuhan resident (copied from wechat) where he was complaining he had to pay a "fee" to get on a waiting list for a bed for the next day for his elderly father who is ill with 2019-nCov and when they rocked up the next day they were sent away saying there weren't any beds anyway.

Sad, but seemingly inevitable...

Looking at the path for QF6032, I wonder if it happens to now be heading to DRW again...?

Edit: If so I wonder if the crew might have run out of hours with the late departure ex-Wuhan.

Well sadly that can happen in the Public Hospital system in Australia when surgery might be necessary; put on a waiting list and sometime in the next few months (if not years) are assigned a date, arrive having fasted, awaiting surgery and then it gets pulled for another reason.

It is following an established air route which is taking them east of Sulawesi here discusses the likely pilot hours.

Roughly They need to arrive at LEA/DRW and turn off engines by UTC 0845hrs to remain within regulatory hours - 4hr and 40min from now (=1505hrs AEST)

I didn't know there will be a second evacuation flight. With 270 passengers, today's isn't full but perhaps sections (J class?) are not occupied by any passengers:

Must be very tiring if on top of the overnight WUH delay for passengers, they have to spend overnight (not in an hotel) in LEA.

Interesting, I saw a report that this is one of 2 retrieval flights QF have planned from Wuhan. No information on when or if it has been approved etc. Guess it will depend on remaining demand as well as a hundred other things.

Edit: Snap Melburnian1 beat me to it

I think the 2nd flight is the second sector to XCH??. I have not heard of another one being planned from WUH

But approx 600 AU eligible passengers have registered. Some have obviously decided not to fly. If they do eventually want to fly the AU govt might have to put on a second flight. Should taxpayers have to fork out just because some changes their minds ?

I don’t think they are overnighting in LEA/DRW.

I think - 270 evacuees, plus medical staff plus government officials. In addition the top deck was roped off for crew only - no passengers allowed upstairs.
