Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

If its anything like other cold/flu type viruses then the highest risks are likely to be the surfaces of highly used public spaces or alternatively being coughed/sneezed/breathed on.

Of course the internal surfaces of an aeroplane/bus/taxi wouldn't be highly used or unhygienic, and not much chance of someone being very close and coughing :oops::oops::oops::oops:

Edit: and the latest news is that it only effects the elderly and infirm or those with a predisposition have been thrown out the window with a 36yo guy in china now hospitalised

Combine that with a low standard of hygiene practices, perhaps under-cooked meat & .

wont be from eating undercooked bats. Rather, it will be from exposure to a live infected animal. Hygienic practices yes.

the ones who die are generally the elderly frail and immunosupressed

Likely to be a lot worse than admitted by China.

Plus reports that another 11 cities are in Quarantine.
Yep. Said that from the get go. China has reacted much too quickly especially around Lunar New Year for it to be anywhere near what they have admitted to. I think we could add several 0000’s to every indicator.

At least they're doing something. SARS was covered up from the start.

I'm intrigued that they haven't given it a new handle yet. SARS MERS et al.

Must be driving the media crazy trying to do a beat up piece in a short news grab and having to say the name out in full ;)

Maybe Chinese Bat Respiratory Syndrome

Having visited several of those cities I just can’t see how it’s logistically possible to lock them down and prevent movement anywhere near 100%.

but don’t forget it’s China!. The idea of curfew is not alien to the locals.

.....

I suspect the hospital will just be a massive “field hospital” to treat only one type of illness. I assume they will just move the Drs/nurses/ancillary staff in from other places.

Wearing masks is not an Australian cultural thing. When I was in Japan, it was a common sight.

Wonder if people here wear masks while travelling.

The more of a germaphobe Ive become, the more I appreciate people wearing mask.

So at what point do we start wearing masks at Coles? I get the feeling once one of us do it at my local, many more will soon follow.

Im also pretty narky about people in the office coming in sick, Im going to go nuclear the next time someone comes in with the flu (which happend a few times late last year and I had them sent home numerous times)

Problem in AUS, if you wear a mask people will think you are sick. In Asia there is no such assumption and in the office environment many workers wear masks and they are well

A mask is not fully protective either. I reckon the regular alcohol hand gel is better (for the flu season) though this particular situation may need both

(I suspect the following isn't news to you)

My travel doc, when we discussed the issue didn't actually downplay the value of using a mask, but wasn't saying 'yeah, great idea' ... he explained that the virus-useful masks were very difficult to obtain (short supply); the one available in their clinic was the 'next one down', so I got a stock and unless something changes, I'll be wearing them in airports in Asia when I go RTW next month, at least. Aircraft have excellent filtration and air circ characteristics, so risk there low except maybe for the rows immediately behind and in front of you. AIrports and hotels probably a bigger risk, plus surfaces. He did recommend a good stock of alcohol wipes or similar for aircraft (public transport) and hotel surfaces.

By then it will be all over or you will going nowhere , isolated in the apple isle watching a global pandemic at it's peak….

Some media reports have alleged the virus jumped from bats to humans and there is a local delicacy of bat based dishes. Combine that with a low standard of hygiene practices, perhaps under-cooked meat & ...........

Whether that is indeed the case, I guess we will know in the fullness of time.

Isn't it bats, but via snakes.... they love their snakes.

Surgical masks are really worn to protect the wearer against blood spatter while in surgery and spreading bacteria to the patient.

To completely protect against viruses you need to be one of those with full person PPE which is not exactly practical

The ones to get are the fluid resistant surgical masks and if you wear glasses, some of them have a sticky top section to reduce fogging of your glasses
I use those alcoholic wipes to wipe down all surfaces around me when flying. The cloth surfaces are impossible.e
