Interesting article analyzing the affects of coronavirus on smokers from various studies.

It appears that if one is a smoker and gets the virus, things can be grimmer than average.

But on the other hand, smokers seem significantly less likely to get the virus in the first place.

If tobacco is such a good prophylactic, maybe tobacconists should be declared an essential service, as they are in Italy.
Cheers,
Renato

From my reading, only one study found smokers less likely to catch it, and in the same breath suggested they'd have more severe complications. I also like this quote:

One group of experts, who trawled through evidence, admitted the data is mostly based on assumptions and called for further trials to clarify the danger.

Also seems sample sizes are a little small, especially for a country the size of China.

Mostly based on assumptions, sounds like a prime opportunity for the pseudo experts to have a field day!

Very true.
But still, results of small studies showing something in one direction - in the absence of anything else - is the way to bet...... for now. Because that's all we have to go with.

Latest results from USA seems to match results in other places like a small town in Germany - that the precentage of people infected (the denominator) seems to be much greater than originally estimated, making all current discussion likely to be obselete in a few weeks.

It will be funny if the mortality rate for Coronavirus ultimately turns out not much different from seasonal flu.

Cheers,
Renato

P.S. Smokers in China often have to smoke outside. Open air and sunshine may be helping them relative to those who stay indoors.

you find the mortality rate funny? Your a real boys boy / girls girl.

Who are we more inclined to believe?

Princess Fiona or Renato1?

No contest really! o_O

Agree.

Can we create a seperate thread for this poster in the playground. Call it Foxy Daily Newsy threads for giggles and then move this and a few other recent threads to it? Would be good to keep them together.

You must get highly sensitive watching news programs and reading papers about mortality rates. Do you get depressed? Weep?

And yes it would be oddly funny (in the ironic sense) if this entire world upheaval wound up being as a result of a virus with similar mortality rates to the typical flu virus. But that remains to be seen.

Well, let's see. Tucker Carlson referred to the study on Chinese smokers some time last week. For a week Google and Bing would not throw up any results on it, but today Google threw up the Daily Mail article.

If you think this comprehensive article is not credible - I think it important to explain why, other than simply making unsubstantied assertions about the publisher lacking credibilty. The article is from 27 March - there should have been rebuttals out by now somewhere, but they haven't shown up in my Google searches

And just curious. Do your allegedly highly credible news sources report to you the studies reported upon in this article? You know.......something that might cause one to doubt the standard wisdom put out by health authorities (e,g, Facemasks don't work for the general public).

Renato

Charts can be interesting. Not exactly following the trajectory for a flu

One doesn't have to believe either me or Princess Fiona.

Reported facts about studies are reported facts about studies.
In weeks or months time there will have been many more studies based on collected data, and we will see whether they support what the Chinese study found, or don't.

If they do, it might encourage smokers to go hunting for Chinese made cigarettes.

Renato

Well yes people with empathy do.

Narcissists of course lack empathy.
It must be a trauma every night for you to watch TV and equally traumatic every morning to check the morning news.

Luckily most Doctors and nurses and other health care professionals can maintain objectivity and not turn to jelly with empathy, so that they can't function. I guess you'd class them as narcissists too.

Renato

And that trajectory is with the huge handbrake of social distancing occurring, plus handwashing etc all occurring.

Imagine how steep it would be without all those measures and in the USA they were only acting like it was like a flu. Oh wait no need to imagine, just look at what happened to New York when they did not have those measures and just were acting like it was just like the flu.

You really have no idea do you.

My daughter works in a ward where death happens each week. She prides herself in assisting all of her patients who are in the palliative stage with what she terms a good death. She does this because she is empathetic with their and their relatives needs.

She acts professionally at all times and takes pride in her ability to work under pressure at all times including regularly in life threatening situations. Each of her patients is important to her. She sees being empathetic as being core to what she does, and indeed that her empathy allows her to do what she does as many could not.

She sees empathy as a strength and not as a weakness.

Correlation does not equal causation.
This is something that the Daily Mail and their readers fail to grasp.
