Hi all,

just finished a long haul trip (BNE-SYD-SCL-BOG-MDE) so maybe my brain is fried, but I am trying to understand how the points (NOT SC) on QF is worked out.

I am P1 with QF.

On a recent trip LAX-BNE in PE I earnt 9,000 "Qantas Points" and 9,000 "status points" for a total of 18,000 points.

ON a SYD-SCL flight in J I earn 11,250 "Qantas points" and "7,500" "status points" for a total of 18,750 points.

LAX-BNE is about 7,160 miles, SYD-SCL is about 7,060 miles.

How do they do the maths???

Questioning QF logic is bound to end in tears.

The days of it all being simple and easy to understand are long gone. Once upon a time the farther you flew the more miles you got. Period. Now, well, it's a dog's breakfast.

City pairs now have their own earnings and there is little to no correlation with the actual miles flown.

Spot on Tom.

3. The Status Bonus is applied to the actual Qantas Points earned when travelling in the Economy cabin. For travel in premium cabins, the Status Bonus is applied to the Flexible Economy earn rate

But why the difference in routes pretty much the same distance?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm guessing it may depend on the competition on the route also?? To encourage you to fly QF if you need it on high competition routes and less if they think you'll choose them anyway on other routes?

Given the points I guess you were in D or I class with the SCL flight. T class for the PE flight.

D/I is "Business Sale / Business Saver" and earns 11,250 base.

T is "Premium Economy Sale" and earns 9,000 base (same as Flex. Economy).

SCL flights have a Flex Economy earn rate of 7,500 so 18,750.
BNE-LAX has a Flex Economy earn rate so 9,000 so 18,000.

thanks serfty - I get the "logic" now. I just never suspected that QF had a system where I would only earn points in J that were the same as flying PE on another route. Time to finally give up on QF I think :(

Although I gave up on VA a couple of years back as a WP points earn was easy to work out, 10 points per $1 spend. Not sure how it works now.

When I shifted to QF it took me a while to work out the points earning and as I have a couple of OCD issues when it come to points I ended up creating a spreadsheet that when I enter SCs earned it calculates both QFF points and Aquire points then sums per trip. I have this worked out for most of QF routes I travel, just need to do a few adjustments for other OWC and QF partners when SCs are not earned.

IMO the QF system could be a bit simpler.

Got that memo, that is why I now have a spreadsheet that sorts it out for me. I must be too 'simple' to understand both simpler and fairer

The short answer is - not as simple as that any more! In fact, the 10 pts/$ spent only ever applied to VA operated and marketed domestic flights.

The 10 pts/$ is made up of 5 base points plus a 100% bonus for Platinum status (or 75% bonus for Gold, etc), but now the bonus doesn't apply to the cheapest fare category (Getaway), so I only earn 5 pts/$ as a Velocity Platinum on many domestic flights.

When it comes to international flights and/or flights operated by partners, the Velocity system is not at all straightforward. It is based on distance flown, but the actual rate of earn per mile varies markedly (sometimes as low as 0.1 pts/mile, with points earn excluded altogether in various scenarios).

EDIT - just realised I was replying to a comment from over a year ago!
