Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26] was 10Apri

Just booked one. The phone process was easy, but some of the options i wanted disappeared while i was on the line.

I got a U class to Perth from BNE via Mel. It has been a very long time since I booked one of these. Does U class still get status credits and points?

Yes, so long as your activity statement shows ANY SEAT AWARD along side the points deduction. Classic Awards also book into the U fare bucket so your activity statement is really the only way to be sure.

Just want to confirm my understanding here. It seems like ASAs are used basically to convert FF Points to Status Credits. For someone like me who is unlikely to fly enough to gain status would I be better off booking regular award flights?

If you have no interest in earning FF points or status credits then I would book a Classic as the $ cost is less. And if you book in J you still get entry into the business lounge.

Correct Buzz. It's all very silly :) much cheaper not to do it. But also not as much fun

Your points stand true mostly, however there are times when a JASA is cheaper than a classic, you also need to look at the overall cost, as status means you earn more points on longer flights.

Re: [Confirmed] QF removing [cheap] ASAs [from web booking engine Jun 26] was 10Apri

Thanks Buzzard.

I don't value the SCs as I'm unlikely to make Silver status on my flying habits.

I earn most of my FF points via involuntary government contributions. I do like earning FF points, but it looks like I'm probably paying around 2c/point when doing a JASA which isn't as nice as the 0.5c/point I get courtesy of Joe. Does that calculation sound about right? (With status I could see the cost per point reducing, possibly to the point where it becomes worthwhile.)

This leaves me comparing Upgrade Awards with Classic Awards, which is probably a discussion for a different thread.

@markis10 : I wasn't aware that a JASA could ever be cheaper than a classic. Any tips to spotting these or is it a try it and see sort of thing?

Very Naughty

A phone booking fee is basically a penalty for booking with Qantas

I wish those highly paid managers stop shooting Qantas in the foot

I know right!!!

Emirates don't charge a booking fee on the phone!!

I love it how Qantas abolishes half of our luggage allowance to line it up with Emirates BUT do they rid the telephone booking fee to be the same as Emirates? NOOOOOOO they do not!

Rude!

As I predicted, QF got caught out getting rid of ASA's online then proceeded to give us MASA's to placate us but their long game was always to get rid ASA's.

F U QF!

I'm not really sure where the surprise is here.

Grrrr - just phoned to book a MASA from SIN to SYD but after the operator could not get it priced he put me on hold and came back to say it couldn't be booked as I wanted to depart from a country other than Australia.
I told him this was not the case as I have booked them from other countries before. He said that this is what his supervisor had advised so he couldn't do anything for me. I was on the phone for 21 minutes and now I'll have to ring back tomorrow.

When dealing with mASA's I have always endeavoured to call during (hopefully) "premium" hours.

Tend to get grief outside of those hours ...

Booked two tickets for this route Jasa last week no problems. Probably took 5 minutes. called the premium number.

Yes - it hasn't helped being a long weekend .
I'll phone tomorrow and hope I get the "premium" hour!

If one gets grief by booking a MASA, then Best ideal remedy is to HUACA.

I suspect that how you are now, how much flying you will do into the future and the potential accrual of life time status may be worth the effort. I know life time gold is value to many on this site

That's one of the big pulls for me - other than service.

Update: I phoned again this morning and was told there is a problem with pricing this far out.
My flights are now booked (I have a booking ref #) but QF will get back to me with the pricing details.

It's amazing how quickly these sectors book out especially now that SIN-SYD will no longer have 747s on that route.
