'Closed' for waitlisting from Y to J?

We've booked a quick getaway next month in Y class to coughet.

We've been storing miles for a RTW J class in 2020 and realised that we have enough available to upgrade from our Y to J from SIN to MEL overnight leg (connecting from our Silkair coughet to Singapore and) in this trip also.

I've done some 'dummy bookings' and can see that the J class is about 80% empty. On the reward site there is waitlist availability.

I phoned the call centre and asked to upgrade using miles and we were told that there wasn't any award flights as we expected. I asked if it was possible to waitlist for availability with our miles and she said that waitlist has "closed".

Do more open up closer to our flight date? Would I be able to upgrade, if there is availability at the airport as a last resort?

We have no status with Singapore. I am Star Alliance Gold through the 'touch of gold' Air NZ promo. Hubby is VA Platinum.

Without the business upgrade we know that the state of the business lounges in Singapore is pretty dire (Singapore and Thai no showers or toilets).

Looking for a little glimmer of hope I think AFF experts. Any pointers?

Sorry can't help with your specific question but it can sometimes pay to persevere.

A number of years ago I was booked on SIN-CNX but waitlist to business never cleared. I called up about 2 weeks from flight and said I'm still interested in upgrade and the consultant said they'd follow up. Received confirmed upgrade within 24 hours.

I know you can't even waitlist but that shouldn't stop you trying. Have you looked at seating availability on ExpertFlyer? That would give you a better indication. If you don't have a subscription to ExpertFlyer there is a thread on AFF where you can ask for assistance regarding flight loads.
