I am looking at travelling PER-HNL return in September on Jetstar in StarClass. The online booking allows me to book this as a single fare. My question to Jetstar (which I was on hold for 45 minutes last night) was would I earn QF business class SC for the PER-SYD leg of the flight. After several unsatisfactory answers and eventually talking to the supervisor I was told the fare books into J class but I would fly economy class in the PER-SYD leg of the flight. I was assured business class status earn for the PER-SYD flight, however was told Jetstar don't deal with frequent flyer requests. I called Qantas as this is a codeshare flight and they were unsure as it is ticketed as a JQ flight. They did however suggest that it may be booked as an I class fare. Qantas agreed that it would be difficult to explain how if seated in economy you could earn business SC. Where would I be seated for such a flight (PER-SYD) and what status credits would i earn (PER-HNL). Thanks in advance.

Interesting question, as I have been thinking of doing exactly this.My impression was that it books into JQ 'D' class, and you get business class credits all the way.

Correct JQ travel on Qantas codeshare in J class is booked D if avail..
I would ALWAYS check the connecting flights with Qantas as if D isnt avail you can find yrself in the Y cabin for the Connecting flight to JQI as D is pretty hard to get hold of EX PER now with all the miners travelling full Jay
and only 1 airline with a Jay cabin

So if the Qantas leg (PER-SYD) of the JQ flight is booked into D and there is D0 then you move into Y class?

By the way, the Jetstar rep made a point of telling me that Jetstar Starclass is NOT an equal to QF business class and as such I would be seated in economy class.

If this is the case do I still earn business class status credits? (as Jetstar indicate "Qantas Frequent Flyers travelling on a Jetstar Starclass fare for flights operated by Jetstar (JQ) will earn equivalent points per mile and Status credits as earned on Qantas Business flights.")

On a side note the Jetstar Starclass fare for Sept is currently is $1199 SYD-HNL and $1341 PER-HNL (before taxes). I would be happy to earn the 160 SC for the PER-SYD return leg for an extra $284. ($1.78/SC)

OK now I'm confused - does anyone know (from experience?) - do you travel in QF business or economy domestic cabin for the JQ connecting flights?

Not that i am in AU at the moment but when i was there and asking the questions of Jet* staff they really seemed to have no ideas what you would get on QF for a domestic connection. I have up attempting to find out as i had no longer a need to fly them.

The whole J class for QF domestic flights is certainly an interesting issue.

When travelling to BKK recently out of BNE, we had a QF connection to MEL. I rang the Jetstar help desk where the CSA informed me that I would be flying J class all the way. Intending on using the on-departure upgrade that JQ offer, when i asked that this would surely put me into J on the QF conection, the QF CSA at the BNE ticket desk said that there was no way someone travelling on Jetstar Star Class would get a J seat but just on JQ metal.

I guess to support this claim even further, is that a J/D? class fare from PER-SYD is $1585 one way on the QF website. So if you were getting $1394+ taxes with Star Class to Honolulu, surely alot of people would use this as a cheap way to get to Sydney and JQ and QF would lose money.

I know that for our flight to BKK via MEL, the entire star class fare with taxes was less than the J class fare to MEL. If it did indeed book into J for the QF domestic sectors, everyone would book to fly though to HNL/BKK and just get off in SYD/MEL.

OR, this is very good value and before JQ and QF work it out, we need to book, book, book! :) :) :)

Littl_flier - So did you fly business or economy on the BNE-MEL leg?

Agreed that Jet* have no idea about Qantas products and services and vice versa. In fact the only common answer I have been able to receive in relation to this matter from both Qantas and Jet* is that they have no knowledge of the others T&C's.

The PER-SYD fare on the Qantas website is a J class. 'D' class is not offered in this sector for purely domestic travel, as far as I can see 'D' has to be in conjunction with something else. Bear in mind that on connecting flights for jetstar, we are talking about JQ 'D' class, which from what I can see, could have you flying in either cabin on the QF connecting flight, it certainly is not clear.

I am surprised that someone has not already reported on what happens in this situation. I could be wrong but I do not believe you will either be seated in business class or even earn business class SCs for QF domestic flights on *class airfares.

I picked a random date in May and the *class airfare MEL-HNL return is $2549.77! The *class airfare PER-MEL-HNL-SYD-PER is $2828.33 which for less than $300 extra someone will earn an extra 160 SCs (instead of the expected 40 SCs) @ $1.87/SC for the QF domestic flight. This has got to be one of the best SC returns I have ever seen!

As the upgrade is a paid ODU and we were not booked into StarClass, we visited the Qantas ticket desk in BNE to pay for the upgrade but were told by the QF staff that they had never even heard of the upgrade and we would need to ask JQ staff in MEL when we collect boarding passes.

So no J class on QF. :(

It would have been interesting if we had of taken the upgrade BKK-MEL-BNE and then I could answer you. Sorry.

I guess this supports my poorly worded explanation above. It would seem very cheap to either get the SC's, points and a seat in J class for $300.

If we find this is the case, its definitely a great deal that could accelerate status for some of us.

Don't get me wrong the expected 40 SCs PER-MEL/SYD-PER for less than $300 @ ~$7.50/SC is still great earning compared to normal QF airfares PER-SYD/MEL-PER! Add to this the 280 SCs for MEL-HNL-SYD in *class and it is a very good deal.

If someone could prove this point to me then I am prepared to fly to SE Asia using Jetstar (cough!) *class and with 3 trips every year I would requalify Platinum.

Here is my take on the matter. I could be incorrect.

Jetstar offer fares from PER-HNL. You can book it as a StarClass Fare.

Their own fare T&C's Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd - Fare Types state the following:

"Qantas Frequent Flyers travelling on a Jetstar (JQ) JetFlex or StarClass fare will earn equivalent points per mile and Status Credits as earned on Qantas flights. JetFlex fares earn at the full economy level. StarClass fares earn at he full business level."

So to me, it's pretty clear that you'll get J SC's from PER to HNL.

Now as for cabin of service, that's a little different. Jetstar clearly states that StarClass cabins are ex SYD or MEL, so there should be no expectation that you will be housed in J for the originating sector. What happens in practice I am not entirely sure.

I am a little sceptical. On JQs select flights page the following is quoted

If your interpretation is correct then PER-HNL in *class for $2800 and 440 SCs and PER-SGN in *class for $2450 and 400 SCs are the best SC earning international point to point fares from Australia. I would love some clarification from someone who has flown these routes.

    Hi all,

I am flying BNE-SYD-HKT rtn on Friday 18 May in * class to make it up to gold from sliver. I will report in about 2 weeks if I was in QF J/Y on the flts BNE/SYD/BNE. Should be interesting. I need the 320 statis credits to make it to gold by the end of the Mth. If it all works out OK I will be there at gold by the end of May?

    Thks all,

    Tony
