I know personally a couple of Custom officers in real life at MEL and it can come in handy if you can mention it in passing conversation.

Don't look now but isn't the whole judicial system corrupt? And if it isn't corrupt then it is extremely incompetent.

Most don't seem to care though. If it doesn't personally affect you then why worry?

the judicial system is not corrupt, nor is it incompetent. that people do not understand it is another matter, and perhaps there could be better communication around that, but a lack of understanding doesn't mean incompetence.

It is corrupt and incompetent.

When a magistrate accepts 'Out of character' excuse and character references from a dozen or more lawyers (some who have been in front of her in court before) for a totally unprovoked 1-punch attack then justice needs to come into question. The accused is a member of a famous Brisbane law firm and conviction would mean they wouldn't be able to practice law. So what?

Ths same magistrate was quoted as saying domestic violence was a bigger issue and obviously more important. That makes me feel safe going out to a club at night.

This is just one of many incidents that make no sense.

And what about the sentence in SA handed to the parents who forced a 4 year old girl to repeatedly ride a motorbike, laughed as she kept falling down and bike fell on top of her and eventually died from her wounds? They were given 8 years. Luckily it has been appealed. Society can do without these creeps. It should have been minimum life sentence without parole. Not good enough. That magistrate needs to be stood down down without pay.

When the Commonwealth Attorney General George Brandis who holds the highest legal office in this land writes a character reference for a person, named Peta Credlin, Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, who was caught drink driving then that would appear there is some duress upon the court. Note, duress. Thankfully she did the right thing and plead guilty right away. However if she wasn't caught by the police early that night, then ran over and killed a Labor politician whilst intoxicated, now that's another story - there might have been some criminal intent involved

Pleading guilty was an inherent part of the requirement for Peta credlin to get off as she did. Apparently that's how that bit of the legislation works in ACT.

As for the four year old killed by her parents. Many years ago a prison officer told me about what happens to those types in prison. 8 years is enough to give them everything they deserve.

can you claim partial refund?
ie if I have say $1100 worth of stuff can I get the refund only up to $900 therefore not have to worry about ticketing the box and getting nabbed on the way back in.

I doubt it. Plus there is not partial thing happening when you return. If the value of the goods exceeds the $900 they charge GST on the full value including the first $900. So if you got a partial refund for $900 for a $1100 item, when you returned they'd charge GST on $1100 not $200.

No partial refund unless you have multiple items and each one above $300. If you have things that cost $1100 then you would have nothing to worry about on return as the 20% depreciation will take value of goods below $900.

Bought a few things in prep for my trip with a friend
i got some qc20's $400
friend got a new camera $850 and iPad $510 with accessories around say $60

Its all from jb hifi so we can claim it but the issue is bringing it back
i assume you can't pool the amounts like with other stuff eg alcohol and cigs. Doubt it, the question asks if I am carrying $900+.
i guess we just don't claim the iPad and stuff when we take it with us.

From the experience of a friend...

If the amount is over the $900 threshold, there is a possibility (but not always) that the Customs agent as you exit the country will put a little note on your passport file for re-entry into the country. It usually accompanies a conversation about the need to declare the goods when coming home.

If you don't declare them, there is a code they put on your entry card that means you don't get to go straight through the nothing to declare line. You will get taken aside and they will go through your luggage until they find what it is you got the refund on - no details are recorded on what the item actually is though so they will question you on every item of value and when you purchased it.

You can pool your allowances when coming back in.

How many travelling together?

If two of you together then you can pool to get a total of $1800 allowance - this gives over $2150 between two (taking the 20% used discount into account).

Pooling just means stick together and answer the questions consistently. When it comes to working out the duty, it's based on current value, so they take price paid and take off 20% if it's used, after all when you walk out the shop that's its real value? That means you can pretty much have paid just under two thousand for goods, claimed the GST, and when pooled be below the threshold. You still need to declare it as that's based on price paid, not current value.

Declare on the way out and then on the way in. With your receipts you will be fine. Just explain you are sharing your quotas - and they may not even ask.

Items can now be less than $300 provided you have more than $300 spent at the same shop, in total.

You can pool tax free allowance with anyone traveling together. You and your friend have $1800 combined, assuming you're both over 18. Also remember the gst that you have refunded doesn't count either.
