Citibank Plus - No Fee No Overseas Transaction Fee Account

Citibank card at ATMs overseas worked beautifully for us. Just one word of advice: Keep to the strict AUD1000 daily limit and don't visit an ATM multiple times in 1 day. It's also important to have a back up - a contingency plan - in case the card is misplaced or rendered unusable.

We were in the woolly back blocks of Poland. Stupidly, I went to the ATM 3 times in one day and went over the AUD1000 limit in total, The last ATM gobbled up the card at 9pm obviously due to their rules around fraudulent use and procedural checks. Luckily the ATM was at a branch of Citibank and we were able to physically retrieve the card the next morning. However, since Citibank in Poland has very little relationship to Citibank in Australia, they were not able to reinstate the card. I asked for holes to be punched into the magnetic strip and only had a new card issued once back in Australia. It was far too much of a hassle to organise a new card from overseas.

Hi all, I find that using an amex prepaid credit card in the states is free when you use their affiliated ATM's, though you will pay through the nose if using back here in Oz, I made this mistake wanting to use the excess funds when we arrived home. They don't charge you any fees to leave the money there and it never expires, although you need to renew your card when that expires. I have found that the others charge yearly fees and rates even though they are prepaid, the worst for this is the new Virgin card that is linked to frequent flyers. I have had many a vigorous discussion with them over this as they advertise that there are no fees for certain things, basically untrue. I find the Amex prepaid best for me for frequent trips to the US and an Australia Post prepaid visa for Europe. Safe Travels all

Has anyone read the 70 page booklet that comes with this card ?

I flipped through it, but don't remember anything standout in terms of gotcha's, aside from the note that non-citibank atms may still charge a fee at the discretion of the bank the atm belongs to.

We used this card/account in China successfully.

It was much better than standing in the queue at the bank for money exchange considering how busy the banks are in China. Plus, it gave better rates than 28 degrees card (marginally).

FWIW the Citibank Plus did not prove as universal as 28Deg in China 2 weeks ago - there were a number of ATMs that it would just not work in. TBH I did not record which Banks ATMs did not like it but am back there next week so will try in 6 or 8 diff ones this trip and post a report. Luckily there are like 100 diff ATMs within 50mtrs Renaissance Bejing Capital Hotel so am never going to be stuck - but 28Deg just worked 1st time every time.

Does anyone know if there are fees/charges for depositing foreign currency into this account? Would it be better/cheaper to deposit a cheque drawn in US$ or use a wire transfer from a US account into the Citibank Plus account? I can't find any reference to deposits in foreign currency on the Citibank web site. It only seems to talk out outbound transfers.

A good question I would like the answer to also!

In PNG the ATMs (none owned by Citi) charge a fee; ANZ for example charge PGK15. That's 15% on a PGK100 withdrawal (obviously) and 5% on 300. While I like the Citi Plus card, I find it better to use it via EFTPOS in PNG than withdrawing cash. JV

Does anyone know if there are any fees for depositing a foreign cheque (say GBP cheque into my AUD citi account)?

I don't think there is a fee as such, but you would likely be using the banks conversion rate of the day, rather then the Visa rate of the day. (ie there will be some builtin money for them in that!)

Thanks, the wording on the Foreign Currency Cheque deposits is a bit funny

"When you deposit foreign currency cheques into your Foreign Currency Account in the same currency."

I read that as a fee being applicable for accounts in foreign currency denominations, its possible there is no fee because they dont allow deposits of non AUD cheques.
