I travel overseas with my family generally once a year for holiday and have always purchased travel insurance. But now I have a CitiBank Platinum card and thought I might as well take advantage of the free international travel insurance.
I've had a look and it seems quite reasonable, but just wondering if anyone has any hints or tips, something I should be aware of as maybe there are some pitfalls? I'd greatly appreciate any assistance and advice offerred.

The best you can do is read and understand the PDS in relation to the inurance . Take particular note of things like:

  • Who in your travelling party is covered
  • what are the limits of the cover
  • What are the excesses
  • if renting cars, is there cover for the country you are renting from and what is it.

Then compare it with a specific purchased cover, like that of Travel Insurance for Australians - Travel Insurance Direct Australia.

I have found that, in general, you tend to get what you pay for.

Hi All,

I would be interested to know if people have used the Platinum Travel Insurance for traveling to the states ?

I have printed out & emailed the CC statement to myself and family and have the phone number for if any urgent issues arise.

But after reading the forums I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on just have the Citibank Platinum CC travel insurance.

I have read the Covermore insurance conditions, and this would be $689 to cover both of us for the trip... The total pay outs are a little higher but not by much...

so is it worth getting or not !

I relied on it - didn't have to use it though so don't know if that's too much help!

I have Citibank Platinum, but use an ANZ Gold travel policy for ski trips.
We had occassion to use it when we missed QF NRT-SYD last February (our fault). The afterhours claims officer (in Aus) got us rebooked on the next day flight (which we were told was full). That CSO was a lifeline at the time.
Just confirm the approval process in times of a medical emergency.

Blu & odysseus thanks for the info... I think I will give it a go and see what happens I have read the TC and pack to front ! time to try my Citibank Plat card out !

thanks again !

Our policy excludes claiming costs due to rescheduled flights (except for weather).
Other than that it seems to cover most of the common things.

Your local flight center will give you the wholesale rate covermore insurance if you are spending enough with them.

I put through about 16k in airfares (100% intl travel only) in the past 12 months through my local lady and she gave me the heads up on this.

$280 for covermore annual policy, down from $450 I think retail is.

All my trips go on a platinum card but I choose to get a *real* policy as backup. The fact you are considerring insurance means that you think something will go wrong....otherwise you wouldn't bother.

It's still more expensive than TID or Colombus.

Also, in relation to the bolded point, I think that when travelling you should always have travel insurance as you never know what is going to happen, not just because you think something may can wrong. Have you heard of Murphy's Law?

We've travelled o/s for years only using Citibank Gold and Platinum free insurance.
My only reservation strangely enough is on rental car insurance. About 5 years ago I clipped a gate in Prague which caused a scrape and about Euros 350 damage.

When I got back Citibank palmed me off to Zurich Insurance. I can't remember whether I perservered with the claim or whether I just paid it. So sometimes when travelling I'll pay the extra to reduce the car rental amount due if you are unlucky enough to have an accident. It does feel like money down the drain. But as I get older travel tends to make one busier than normal. Perhaps I've been sold by the rental agencies that if you have an accident but with the right cover you simply hand back the keys and that's that.
