Hi All,

I've booked a trip to the US for myself and my wife (BNE-MEL-LAX-JFK-MCO-LAS-HNL-LAX-BNE) directly (ie not through a travel agent) with all flights and accommodation expenses purchased via my Citibank Platinum Credit Card. These purchases are therefore covered under the Complimentary Travel Insurance offered by Citibank (www.citibank.com.au/global_images/complimentaryinsurance/pdf/citibank_tc_270911.pdf).

My concern is that the flights on the trip are booked through multiple carriers independent of ach other (ie QF flight BNE-MEL-LAX connects to separate AA flight to JFK) and while I've endeavoured to allow enough time between these connections I'm aware of the inevitable possibility of delays causing us to miss a connecting flight.

Therefore my question is, does the insurance provided by Citibank cover the cost of any replacement flights missed and accommodation charges required at departure or lost at destination? And if not is there a recommended travel insurance that I should look at taking out which will cover this scenario - preferably with access to a consultant for assistance in booking etc.

Thanking you all in advance

The insurance is provided by Zurich when I last enquired.

Delay and subsequent missing connection is not covered unless the dealy is due to weather conditions. I was told they would cover accomodation till next available flight+ basic expenses. If missing of a connecting flight is due to a technical fault of the preceeding flight then no payments would be made. Zurich will send you a detailed e-copy of the plan related to CitiPlatinum.

overseas travel ticket’ means either:
• a one way ticket from Australia to an overseas destination; or
• a return ticket to an overseas destination and returning to Australia.
...
Who is eligible?
Select Card, Signature Card, Platinum Card and Gold Card cardholders are eligible for this International Travel Insurance, if their travel is for no more than three (3) consecutive months for Gold Cards, or six (6) consecutive months or less for Select Cards , Signature Cards and Platinum Cards and when prior to leaving Australia their overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) was obtained by one of the following methods:
For Select Cards, Signature Cards and Platinum Cards:
• cost charged to a cardholder’s Card; or

Your "BNE-MEL-LAX" if a one-way ticket should satisfy the first activation part for the ‘overseas travel ticket’, and if, as I presume, LAX-BNE is the return part of the outbound, that covers via the second part.

I would pay special attention to this part:
Travelling Overseas
If you have an emergency while you are overseas, you can call Zurich Assist on +61 2 9995 2021 at any time from any place in the world, by reverse charge, if necessary.

We recommend you take this booklet with you when travelling overseas as it contains important phone numbers and details of the covers provided.

You should also take copies of your overseas travel and flight itinerary, your credit card statement and evidence of how you obtained your overseas travel tickets to help with proof of your eligibility for the covers.

If you want to make a claim whilst overseas, you will need to confirm to us or our agents that your overseas travel tickets were obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in this booklet. Without this information, a claim may be delayed and it may not be possible for us or our agents to give approval for overseas medical attention.
