Cheapest Oneworld business class SYD-LHR?

Another vote for the AY option here. Particularly if you can get either the new A350 or one of the refurbed A340's with the fully flat seats (via HK).

Helsinki offers probably the smoothest connection in Europe from non-schengen to schengen.

The OP is headed to LHR - isn't the UK non-schengen?

Not cheap, but you will earn the most QF SC by flying with a QF code all the way, going via HKG or MNL with a OW partner, without a QF flight number, will see you earn not a lot of SC.
If you can, go Points + Pay, where you have a booking in J, and use the points to pay part of that J fare, while its not an economical usage of QF FF points, you will earn a larger number of QF SC by flying Australia to DXB with EK but with a QF flight number, in J with Point + Pay. Don't tick the Classic Awards box, you earn no FF or SC points with that P + P.
People do say I talk a lot of bullpoop but its the fastest way to go towards QF SG.
I fly to NZ a lot, and have gotten QF SG by either flying only QF flight codes, either with Jetconnect, or with EK but ensuring I have a QF flight number.
Simpler and Fairer or Fairer and Simpler, have made SC earn on OW airlines, while being a QF FF member, earning SC is now a pittance.
Edit: SYD - DXB - LHR one way, flying with a QF flight number (EK metal), in J, earns you 24,800 QF FF points and 280 QF SC, double that when you come back, thats 49,600 QF FF points and 560 QF SC!
OR: see what you could earn. If you're logged in you'll see your earn based on your tier status.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The cheapest business return I've seen from SIN to LON or CDG was $1900~ with Sri Lankan with 320 status credits for the whole trip. That was quoted in Jan for travel in July. New A330-300 with new business product, too.

Yes. When I did this trip last year (aside: IIRC the 340's are NOT getting new J, it's the 330's) our ex-HKG flight landed, it was a simple walk, through security, then the lounge was steps away, and the gate for LHR a minute or so walk from there. No EU entry or any of that - basically an international-international type transit. VERY easy.

AP are you actually part of the QF marketing team? If not, they should comp you WP for constantly pushing their product designed to reduce their liability at high cost to the consumer (relatively) :) Well done, sir!

Some of the AY A340 fleet are definitely running the new J seating. I flew HKG to HEL last year and got the new fully flat seats both ways.

SIN-HEL ran non upgraded A340 last I did it.

Have a look at the FTDashboard site - it will show you which routes run the upgraded A340 J

Thanks for that. Seatguru lists 3 343 configs that are all angle lie flat, and not the new product and I had always been under the belief that the 340's were to be replaced by the 350's so not going to be upgraded to the standard of the 330's. Mea Culpa.

I have to say when I flew on the 343 last year HKG-HEL it was.. not good. (but I had little expectation per earlier research)

I had new A340 J fit out last month HKG-HEL and EF shows it for HEL-BKK next week. We found it very good.

No, RichardMEL, I don't work for QF, but the OP did say he wants status, and to get the full worth, while flying QF is not a cheap option, but to get the full worth of QF status, he has to fly QF.
OP is WP now, what I suggest will help him to keep at that for the next year, or keep him at SG anyway, but..., must admit, he did say cheap.
However, seeing that a lot of you have a love hate relationship with QF, I will bite my tongue on this thread.

I'm also concerned to keep WP, and it seems that the SYD-LHR route via DXB, whilst more expensive, is by far the best SC earner for the route, is that the consensus?

Correct. No other 1W route will earn as many SCs.

Our BKK- HEL later this year has just changed from an A340 @ 10:55am departure to an A359 @ 9:05am.
So about 2 hrs earlier but we get a nice shiny new aluminum tube. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

And the AY seat selector is inaccurate as it only shows a single aisle of 2-aisle-2 config by the way.

I think you mean carbon reinforced polymer, rather than aluminium! :)
