The free cover is provided by Allianz, and their website says:

If you entered into a policy after 7am (AEST) Friday 29 June, 2018 we would expect that this was done with an awareness of the increased activity of Mt Agung and that this could affect travel. For these policies, where that is so, claims that arise due to volcanic activity associated with Mt Agung (for example, flight delays or cancellations) may not be covered or have reduced cover.

So provided you activated your cover earlier you should be OK

Compare that with eg. Covermore who won't cover anyone for Bali unless the policy is older than Sept 2017!

That is a very good question, and I suspect until someone goes through a claim process we won't know the answer.

My first thought for the Amex travel credit was "I have an invoice for the full amount, it should be covered" but I checked my invoice (for a flight booked with Explorer travel credit) and it says:

$536.82
Discount - $400.00
Tax $93.17
PAYMENT RECEIVED: $229.99

So from the insurance PoV we've received a "discount" on our bookings and are only owed for the amount we paid over and above the travel credit.
thank you for the super response,
unfortuantely I havent actiaivted yet, but Iwill do so now,

and the travel credit thing is very very interesting,
would be far easier if it was clear cut,
but better to know rather than get a nasty surprise!

Allianz have a dedicated page to the volcano reference

ur policies do not cover claims for losses caused by something that you were aware of at the time of purchasing your policy. If you entered into a policy after 7am (AEDST) Tuesday 19 September 2017 we would expect that this was done with an awareness of the Mt Agung activity and the possibility of issues arising due to this activity. For these policies, claims that arise due to volcanic action associated with Mt Agung (for example, flight delays or cancellations) will not be covered events

I know insruance is a busienss but to not cover from sep 2017 is very bad actions,

Can you link to where you saw that? Because the Allianz page in my other post only talks about the 29th of June.

I agree, Indonesia is a volcanic place so they may as well cancel insurance cover indefinitely for that country...

I have an annual multi-trip cover with RAC (WA) and their coverage stopped from Sep 2017 as well

I was going to start a new thread but feel this is possibly a logical place to start my posts.

From 1st October 2018 the cover provided by CBA for free CC insurance is now by Covermore.

CBA offer paid insurance through Covermore though if you had a CBA Diamond CC you get the same insurance free of charge. It's a very simple process to register online and a simple quickly answered phone call if help is needed.

Over the years we have used a variety of different TI so I've looked at quite a few. Fortunately we have had very little need to claim. Starting this year I have started using this free insurance and unfortunately have had need to claim already.

We have used this TI for a 14 night cruise in Jan/Feb, a recent trip to KL for my wife and have several lined up going forward.

On her trip to KL my wife lost her three month old iPhone Xr. Fearing the worst I enquired about the TI and was amazed. They assessed the phone at its new purchase price and responded including payment, minus the $250 excess in seven days. For the claim they required the usual contact details (it was a lease phone), the police report from KL and proof that the IEMI had been deactivated. All pretty simple and low stress.

We have taken this insurance for a two month trip including a 29 night cruise later this year. For that one there is an extra $70 cruise cover for medevacs etc.

I am always VERY sceptical about anything 'free' however this seems to work very well.

Thanks.
Good to hear the new insurance provider at CBA is as expeditious resolving claims as was their old one.
