Just had a great trip Cairns/ Hong Kong/Cairns (with friends) on Cathay Pacific.

My wife and I had various CPX vouchers from a previous trip to HK due to being bumped off a flight at the time. This flight 4 of us were using FF points.

The five of us arrived at the CNS airport and found the flight was delayed 2 hours, I kindly asked at check in if we could use our 2 lounge vouchers and also bring our 3 friends in as well!, at first it was a tad negative but I told her 2 off my companions were Qantas Club Members (they are but not flying Q on this occasion), the other (my best) friend had just had the bereavement of his wife of 50 years (he had). Off she went to make enquiries and bingo we were all in, very nice few hours we all had too.

At HK we simply checked in our luggage at Kowloon and jumped on the fast train to the airport (and picked up our gear in CNS on arrival, a great service I must say).

I asked if we could go BC with the upgrade voucher we had, he said "can't tell you until actual boarding", we waited in line then over came the check in guy and he asked us to jump on the BC queue, yep we received the upgrade, a very nice trip it was too.

So a big thank you to CPX, and they have us and our friends as very satisfied customers, and no doubt we will fly with them again.

Good news re CX - I have found them to be great to fly with (I havent had to do anything like you have - just the main flying experience) and are certainly one of my preferred carriers.

Limewood its great to hear that you and your friends enjoyed your CX experience.

I find the service of CX to be brilliant. I think other airlines could take a leaf out of CX and Singapore Airlines books on customer service both inflight and at checkin

Yes we will sure remember this for a while and of course tell anyone we know who is contemplating an OS trip about CPX.

Been to HK twice in past year, the thing that gets us it the fantastic MTR (Rail) system, now if only OZ could get one that nice, clean and efficent it would keep cars out of the city and big suburbs.

Interesting comment re keeping cars in the burbs - I am sat in HKG at the moment lookng out of the office window and can see the lines of traffic stuck in jams at the moment - I am note sure having a great MTR is fulling easing travel woes ;)

Oh' cars there yes know what you mean in HK what with so little roads and the huge condensed population. An OZ friend has been an air traffic controller there for past 17 years, says he doesn't have a car for reasons you point out.

The problem with car ownership in Hong Kong is not the price of the car itself - but the price of keeping the car somewhere.

I have to say my most recent experience (2 years ago) with CX was not that good SYD-HKG-LHR -HKG-SYD in Y was cramped and the service I thought was just ok.

Will be back with them in December but this time in J and as a WP expect I might get a more pleasant experience.

You will notice a huge difference between Y and J. The CX Y cabin is similar to QF and BA as far as being cramped is concerned. And from SYD you will have the CX version of Skybeds which are quite good, but the CX service in J and F is consistently superb.

I travelled Y syd-hkg-lax on 09 May.
Then last week lax-hkg, stopover for 4 days and hkg-syd last Fri.
Despite close to full flights all sectors, I had good seats, esp. last leg when I had 3 seats on row 70 (on the airbus).
Service was very pleasant and the CX lounge was useful for a shower before the overnight flight home.
On all the sectors, CX served JW black label and Chivas. That's special.
Like other poster, I checked in luggage at the central checkin centre to leave me light hand luggage.
The only issue with transfers is the rather long walks between gates. Flights ex sydney arrive around gate 65/67 whereas flights to NA go from around gate 3. Despite, would gladly travel CX, anytime.

Maybe not totally O/T, but I had a great flight CGK-SIN with Emirates in Y a couple of weeks ago.

It was a newish 777 and the seats were nice with reasonable pitch (guessing at 34").

Oh, how much nicer than Qantas (and dare I say CX) Y...

Ah yes, but the real question is what scotch do they serve?
