To be sure this sort of issue must have been discussed here before multiple times but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for...

I bought a Victorinox Avolve 2.0 56cm cabin bag today. Doing a lot of domestic back and forth these days and I want to avoid checking luggage, so went for a bag on the acceptable limit (the 115cm formula). It's 56 x 35 x 25, which is 116 cm! This is supposedly within US carry-on acceptability but may be just a tad large for QF? It expands to 50 litres, but I don't plan to do that. Does anyone have any experience with this bag or something similar? I'm mainly on 737s and 717s these days, except for the odd Dash-8 where it will go Premium, no worries. Even if they don't hassle me, I don't want to be struggling to get the thing into the lockers!

I can take it back and change to the slightly smaller version which is definitely kosher. Any ideas? How will I go with this thing? I do like it, but...

Thanks for any advice.

Considering the sort of bags that get taken onto QF flights these days, I reckon you will be fine.

Thanks Jessica - yes, true. I want to avoid being one of the ones who's getting the dirty looks though!

If you want to be sure, put it through one of the sizers (at the airport, or the many luggage stores that have them). If any of it protrudes, then an airline could refuse to allow it in the cabin.

Apparently AA has begun doing this in the US - which means I will no longer travel there with my Samsonite, which is 115cm all up, but 2cm wider than the sizer .........

Its the bleeding Krispy Kremes that take up a thousand (so to speak) available places in the overhead compartment.
Nowadays, even an Adelaide suburb has one outlet, but ohhh, no, people still decide its easier to import a box with them filled with the "contraband" and bring them to Adelaide.
I was coming back on QF701 recently, and guess what, the FA (all 3 of them), kept going up and down them all, opening, closing, opening, closing, looking for space for another item which was too big to go under the seat in front of someone), but I guess in the end, found a spot for it.
Krispy Kremes should be a banned item on planes!
No, I am not a fan of it either.
Not to mention that even the youngest of tots these days have their own pull along! Why not the overhead comparements get filled up, even on 75% load 737 plane.

Even if yours might be 114cm circumference, that does not mean it would have space up there, unless you fly J regularly.
Y and subclasses of it on Australian domestic flights, tend to their overheads full even by the time the plane load reaches 60% or 75% pax load.
Kids now have their own pull along, ... this adds up to the usage of "your rightful space" but teken up by them space.

John, I'm not sure that any of those spinner bags would go into the sizer. I've only ever been harassed about that or weighed at Perth international, for some reason. The bag I bought sounds similar in dimension to yours but says US compliant. I've seen people bring on bags in the States that I'd be embarrassed to check in the hold!

I know QF was mentioned here, but I find VA is hopeless at policing cabin luggage size and quantity. I amuse myself during boarding by watching all the clowns trying to back a removalist van up to cabin door and then struggle in with 2 and 3 oversized bags each. I can only remember once where someone had their ridiculously oversized hand luggage removed to the bowels and that was only because they could not actually fit it in the overheads (737)....they were not stopped before getting on board and attempting to stow it (if they had a 3t hydraulic jack with them, I'm sure they would have tried forcing the luggage bin opening a bit further apart)!

With the trend of "no included checked luggage" type fares, I think the responsible airlines do need to police hand luggage limits but for the OP, I personally don't think you have a problem at all.

Yes, sounds familiar. I'm stuck with it now anyhow, it went 'premium' from CBR to SYD and came out with black marks on it. Also now know that it fits nicely, sideways, in a QF 767 locker. And no-one batted an eyelid. Will know about the 737 in a week or so.

The US airlines hit you for $25 a bag. No wonder people try and carry on refrigerator sized bags.

I think its also because a lot of people know they can check in at the gate to avoid the fee. I know a few times Ive walked up to the gate and asked if I can check in my roller (because I didn't want to be bothered with it) and they gladly take it.

I recently purchased 6 domestic US flights, it was cheaper to get First with check in included than the cheaper PE fares and having to pay for checkin.

I just heard on the radio that TT are cracking down on hand luggage with it proposed to cost up to $85 for something......I wasn't listening closely.

This was also our experience on a recent trip to the US. If you include the priority check in and TSA pre tick, it's worth looking at it when you book.
