 Drron has surprised me with a quickie trip to Singapore next month ( BRI - SIN CX J ) using up his rapidly expiring points. We are going for 6 days. I DO NOT PACK LIGHT - but in my favour most of our os trips are 6 weeks and several climate changes. I would light to try just HCO - I have read about people who can do it, I am just not one of them. As for Ron I have packed his bags for the last 40 years, so he is no help there. So give me as many hints and tips .... I am willing to give this a GO. ;)

This is not going to help... why go cold turkey? Go to SIN with HCO and come back with another suitcase!
Another option is to get your purchases mailed back/couriered
Carry no toiletries, easy to get mini packs in Singapore/hotel provided
Minimal clothing, get them laundered
Flying J you should be able to push your entitlements... have never been weighed/asked on CX J

I think KitKat is spot on.

Go light and come back heavy....;)

mrs.dr I just conveyed the thrust of your post to Cruiserette - her response was "bingo" - shopping spree - HCO for sure - 1 day shopping in SIN you won't need clothes for another year - but most importantly pay particular attention to use CC that maximizes your FF pt earn - you will need to go back in 12mths time to repeat.

For a start, I do like KitKat's suggestion!

And to be going on with: I empathise and sympathise.
Most of my o/s travel is like yours, with multiple climate changes, added to the need for Business wear, evening wear and casual gear. I understand the challenge!

If you MUST do the carry-on only - and I HAVE done it but never easily, then a few basics:

1) Layers.
That won't be so important for Singapore but you will still need to contend with the ferocious aircon and the possibility of rain.
2) Pashminas and scarves.
Add warmth, when required, and dress up a plain block coloured outfit of basic skirt/trousers and top. A couple of fancy gauzy scarves will add to your basic black for a glamorous evening outfit, along with some glittery earrings.
3) Minimise colours.
Choose black/white/beige/navy as your theme and make sure everything matches. Reduces the need for multiple pairs of shoes, handbags etc.
4) Colourful costume jewellery.
Again, to "jazz up" a plain outfit.
5) Cotton beach wraps/sarongs/pareas (call them what you will).
Use them as an additional throw, a sun protector, a picnic rug, a bathrobe, a poolside cover up etc etc.
They weigh nothing, pack flat, and can be thrown into a day bag for any eventuality.
6) A "Day Bag".
Can be used as your "personal item" when boarding and will take a fair amount of weight, if you use a lightweight fold up type. If you want to take a special handbag, make sure it is lightweight, then pack it inside the day bag, along with your reading material, liquids and gels etc, so it won't be part of your carry on bag.
7) Most important: A champagne stopper.
Just in case you have only time for one glass before you head off to dinner! The rest of the bottle will be in good shape on your return.

Okay, I'll stop there.

Probably nothing you didn't know - and there may have been six great posts while I've been typing this one!
Best of luck.

If I want to travel light I just pack want I wear for the first 3 days and then use laundry services after that.

Also take clothes that are lighter weight and make sure you know wot the weather is going to be like.

Always remember there is a shop if you need a jumper or something that you forgot.

"When the going gets tough...................the tough go shopping".................... but don't take menfolk with you........

Thanks for all that plus I am working my way thru the 35 pages on the HLO thread !

I have made a list of what I want to take and it is feasible. I would like a new set of luggage and we are looking at the Rimowa Salsa Air in purple or the Antler Liquis in navy, and the Singapore Sale is on when we are there so hopefully all the new purchases will come home in those :D

I will let you know how I get on !

One thing I've learnt over the years for light travelling - wear dark clothes, one pair of shoes & if LH use the amenities pack for toothbrush etc.

Agree the dark clothes.
BUT:
Find a woman who can travel with one pair of shoes ....
And then clone her!
It's a challenge.
Day wear, evening wear, walking, beach, travel. Two pair absolute minimum, IME.
[And anyway, who wants the same pair of shoes on their feet day after day?]

Isn't that the reason they invited socks....change em & it feels all new again......also, the shoe fairy gives them the magic touch up during the night/morning and they look brand new for the new day:cool:

However, I concede the point as I've lost the same augment here at home on countless occasions:!:

I do this fairly regularly, and being SIN only, makes it even easier. Think:

. A very lightweight pull-along bag. So many HCO weight 4kg but mine is just over 1kg. It's old enough to vote, and has never given up the ghost. Wish I could find another one. Antler seems to be the best nowdays, but make sure you get the lightweight one with maximum space. Some of the latest bags have curved in tops - cuts down on the interior space.

. Very good quality materials in black, particularly for the bottoms. Quality always shows.

. 3 pairs of black slacks (preferably silk) one on, one in the wash and one in the bag. Very light to pack. Hand wash them out, hand up, iron the next morning. Bingo.

. 4 lightweight tops in good quality silk - it doesn't crush nearly as much.

. 1 good jacket that can go anywhere (wear on the plane). Mine is a very heavy silk.

. 1 lightweight cardigan (wear on the plane)

. 2 pair of shoes - one walking - one dressy but can be used for walking if necessary (remember, it rains a lot in SIN). Wear a 3rd pair on the plane.

. Cotton nightie / PJs + a lightweight robe that can be used as a dressing gown and that can double up around the pool

. Underwear of your choice - I always carry minimum 3 sets, often 4 if moving around.

. Toiletries - this can be a killer weight wise. I only take bare essentials - cleanser, moisturiser, toothpaste + brush + basic medicines (being SIN makes it easier). Use hotel's shampoo etc.

Many years ago, I worked with the wife of a very well known rag trade man. They did RTW at least twice a year, away for 3 weeks at a time, and they only ever used carry-on. Her packing routine was as above, except she used skirts - only colour she had was black. They would regularly go to business lunches, dinner / opera in Paris, London, NYC but she never varied her packing.

SOCKS AND HIGH HEELS ... OMG :D

I am a bit of an Imelda when it comes to shoes, so narrowing it down to taking two pairs will be hard, but I just might see a few extra pairs calling to me when in Singapore

OK..... the time has come, we are off to Singapore in the morning. 5am pick up. I have packed our bags. BOTH HLO !! This is a first for both of us going OS with just carry ons. Our bags weigh 5.9kgs and 5.3kgs for Ron. And I am going with just ONE pair of shoes !!!!!!!!!! OMG We have three lunches booked, Iggys, KuDeTa, and Salt Grill. And it just happens to be The Great Singapore Sale week.

I certainly hope that the Antler Liquis is on sale - I feel we might need it for the return flight.

As usual Ron is doing his trip reports.

I was looking closely at Iggy's recently (thought about a trip to take it in), please do report back with how it was and if it deserves its ranking. Did you consider Waku Ghin as well?

Last time we were in Singapore we had lunch at Iggys and it was FANTASTIC, hence the booking there. Salt Grill is one of Luke Mangans restaurants, and I have always wanted to try one of his, and KuDeTa is at the top of the new weird building and the menu looked interesting, as for Waku Ghin - I am not a big fan of Tetsuya - when he is on the sunshine coast ( he has a crab business here ) he eats at the same japanese restaurant as us
.
Full report to follow.
