Can AirAsiaX get away with this?

Thanks for highlighting your issues. It is a reminder that Low Cost Carriers don't make money from selling really cheap fares. They make their money through the extra service fees, change fees, cancellation fees etc. Your situation is most unfortunate and very tough on you, but unfortunately its all too common - especially among the low cost carriers. Its not unique to Air Asia X and can happy with some full-service carriers if you get caught with the most restrictive (generally also the cheapest) fares.

For me, about 20 hours but the $$ back was worth it.

Unfair contract terms helped me in my fight with an Australian airline on a fare that was non-refundable...
I've been seeing (but not closely following) the class action against banks in which the consumers have been arguing that the punitive bank charges are nor reflective of the inconvenience that a consumer may have caused the bank by being overdrawn by 10c for a few hours.

Surely, the airlines have a similar situation. From memory I had a $80 Tiger airfare at Christmas which was going to cost me $100 to change. How can it cost for for an airline NOT to fly me and my luggage.

As a private policy any booking I make on Tiger, Jetstar, AAX I accept I have to walk away from if my plans change.

The airline is probably relying on a few throw away tickets to fund others, the loss of those throw aways in terms of revenue is a cost as strange as it may seem.

I have had a refund on non-refundable tickets when they change flight times, so then I can say that the new time is not suitable etc etc. Might be worth holding off, see what happens between now and January.

Not a bad idea, they certainly seem to come to the party when the change is initiated by them!

When it comes to Air Asia, they simply don't play by the rules. They are quite happy to change flight schedules and you have to accept the alternatives but rarely do they provide refunds for things like that. Mind you, the rules may be a bit different with flights originating from Australia, as they'd have to abide by Australian law. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a flight schedule change! LOL

I will certainly hope for that. That is my ticket out of this ticket (no pun intended). ;)

Well you do advertise your MH credentials. Why did you stray to AAX?? Greener on the other side?

I have thought of giving them a go, however your story and those of others with LCC's has put me off.

I value my time to go to recovery lengths needed here.

I've been slagging off AirAsia for quite a while now but I thought I should give them a go before continuing to slag them. Now I have lots of ammo. This has taught me never to consider Air Asia (X) ever again. I just delete any emails they send to me.

That's what we call voting with our feet!!

*shrug* I've really only had positive experiences with both D7 and AK. A few delays here and there but nothing major. One flight did change by 3 hours, but we were sent an SMS advising of this about 10 hours in advance.

Mind you, I treat them as a LCC .... I know I can't change tickets or cancel without heavy penalty. So I never book unless I know I can fly that day, or it's cheap enough that it won't annoy me to be a throwaway.

Also, I quite like the KLIA-LCCT. It actually feels like Asia to me. The tune hotel is great for stopovers. Transport options to the city are wonderful. The food court a quick 2 min walk away is great and cheap.

*shrug* to each their own!

Just another good reason to avoid LCC's (or hybrid LCC's as I call them aka DJ *tongue in cheek*) :) altogether especially for Intl flights.
The often small saving is simply not worth it for when something goes wrong, you need to change, airline delays ruining holiday plans, fees for extras.etc.
Saying that they can be ok for shorter haul, as it involves less risk and less cost.

Though Asia is much more than a four letter word.:D

Having read through all the posts, I feel somewhat wiser about what to expect.
I only recently travelled for the first time with an LCC, on a great deal from Scoot to SIN return.
It was a pleasant enough experience, because nothing went wrong!
Aviation seems to be the only business where if you buy their product, and decide not to use it,
they keep your money anyway. I can order goods from stores and pay in advance, and if they arrive I can say I dont want them and get my money back. Could you imagine losing your car deposit if you change your mind?
Maybe the ACCC should look into the airlines?

I thought Air Asia did a refund. Secondly their Premium Economy is not worth the money. Not overly comfortable. And generally speaking Malaysia Airlines will give you a return economy for about same money. Whih includes your luggage, entertainment, decent food and WINE and yes sir!
As for the taxes Malaysia Airlines will refund but charges 100RM. So they have not had to pay the money to anyone but robs you.
Qantas like MAS has some of the highest taxes in the world. And how come flying the same trip with someone else the taxes are lower.Do they turn a motor off??

It is downright thievery. I am quite willing to contact the ACCc what about some others joining with me. They have your fare for the cancellation why they still rob you.

Check out a couple of other airlines to Europe and see the taxes.
I believe that Qantas and Mas use them to offset offering cheaper fares. Qantas was recently fined , again, a few million for engaging in dishonest PRICE FIXING.I suppose they call it busines, but roguery is roguery no matter how they spin it.

I had a question here . If Alan Joyce knew about it then he authorised dishonest practice?
If he didn't know about it? Does that make him incompetent?
Did the Board know about it? If thet did AZTIC should be laying charges.
If they didn't they should be asking their CEO to resign.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Qantas the great Australian

I can tell you for a fact that aviation is not the only industry that does this. There are so many goods and services out there which have non-refundable deposits. If it was an issue, the ACCC would be on top of it already. Apparently Freight prices are more of a concern for them.

By the way some people carry on, it would seem that LCC are the only airlines to have delays, issues and cancellations. In the real world, it would seem that full service carriers face the same issues as well.
There have been horror stories from both LCC and Full service airlines.
When D7 cancelled their EU flights, I had a friend booked on them to the UK. She was transferred to the MH service on the same day, no questions asked.

I fly D7 Premium to KL this year, and for the price, the actual hard product is very good. Apart from the food being very basic, there was nothing wrong with the actual experience.
I don't think LCC's are as bad as what people are making them out to be.

Hey there as for Scoot. I booked whenn they just started flying. later I wanted to change one leg. It was another $299 withe fees etc. but they would not allow it as it was a sale fare. At the same time they are advertsing sale sale sale. The planes are not full, they need the money, yet they will not take another $299. Does not sound like good business to me.
I read the story on their CEO, a kiwi, and he made a point of saying we are not arrogant. I sent him a personally addressed registered letter. No reply! Sent another and paid to be notified that they had received it Again no reply! If that is not arrogance, then is it it ignorant, bad manners?
They should also be charged with misleading advertising. Have a look at the menu and pic of the meals. The see the gluck they serve, also dangerously hot.
As for the ipads for entertainment, if you put tem on your table you have to get a crooked neck watching them. And apart from holding them there is no where else to put them.( all tables are in the arm rest.)
But then they are interwined with Tiger? Need more be said.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Price fixing was freight, and not passenger services, so where is the relevance?

And sorry, but I disagree with you on the comment about D7 premium. Where can you get a bed (forget the fact that it is sloped), for $550 ow? I am aware that the price was a special, but it is better than any economy seat, and IMHO equal to or slightly better than Skybed Mk1. If I had the choice of 60 inches of room, plus a sloped bed, or 32-34 inches and limited recline I know what I would choose.

You booked a sale fare. Again, the fact that it is not changeable would have been highlighted to you when you booked. Why and how is it an airline problem?

These types of fares are not limited to LCC's. There was a famous thread on here of a person believing that because they paid the cheapest fare on SQ, SQ should bend over for them. I will dig it up once I get the chance!
