I have booked JAL Syd-Haneda mid May arriving 5.05pm. I wish to overnight in a proper hotel room to depart next day at 10.40am to Paris.
Current info (25/2/22) seems to be no o/n transit allowed outside of the airport.
Any advice ? Plan another route ? Stay inside airport in transit room and use Business Lounge ?

Also, planning 4 days stopover in July in Tokyo on return from Europe - too soon ??

Hold off booking? If Russian airspace is closed, flying from Japan to Europe is going to get very difficult.

Thanks - yes, that's my thoughts as well. Need to lock in a flight asap so perhaps need to pay more and go via Middle East.

I have a similar issue travelling W SYD-HND 31/5 and then travelling to LHR next day.
At this stage, cannot enter Japan.
Transit Hotel at Haneda is closed and really it appears the only option for us is an uncomfortable night in the terminal. The Sakura lounge is also closed but I believe that Sakura lounge customers can use the first class lounge - unconfirmed.
No info available from JAL or Royal Park Hotel after numerous attempts to obtain.

There's a decent chance of rules being eased before Golden Week starts at the end of April. Hopefully Japan won't be absorbed into its northern neighbour by then.

From a recent trip report, I think you'll be sleeping in the terminal unless things change between now and the time you travel.
Didn't look too uncomfortable though!

Check your reservations, there was a big batch of JAL schedule changes on April 25 and more coming mid may. It’s Russia related but also flights being added back in. You may be able to snag a less inconvenient connection. If they force the change on you they shouldn’t charge you a fare difference.

I’ve only had a reservation for a week and had to do one change. I expect more

I am booked to fly JAL from SIN to HND to JFK late in October.

At this stage, I think the transit part of the Hotel at HND is still not open to transit passengers, so it looks like we will be having an overnight stay in the terminal area, and in the airline lounges when they are open.

There was a trip report by an AFF reader earlier in 2022 who had a similar experience at HND. That report can be found at
SYD to LHR on JAL in J - live trip report (leaving 27th Jan)

It won't be the first time I've had to spend the night in the public areas of an airport terminal, but I'm a lot older now than when I last did so.

I could try changing my flights to eliminate the longer transit time, but October is a long time away, and I'm hoping that the situation at HND will change before then. Good luck with your travel plans.

Thanks for your reply.
We are in our 70s so will definitely not want to spend 18 hours in the terminal. Probably won’t book until the transit hotel is open.

We were booked SYD HND HEL/HEL HND SYD in July/August. I had booked the outbound flights in J using AA points and the flight timings meant a stopover in HND which suited us. The HEL HND was booked in PE using QF points with a one night stopover in HND before the return HND SYD in J. On both stopovers we were planning to stay outside of the airport as the only airside hotel is closed.

We were notified by QF last week that our flight HEL HND had been changed to the next day. I have been keeping an eye on the JL website for updates and as per the changes/cancellations announced last week, our outbound flights SYD HND HEL have been changed/cancelled as has our return flight HND SYD but so far no notification from either JL or AA.

Due to the ban on flying over Russian airspace, the flight time HND HEL has gone from just over 10 hours to 14hrs 14 mins and from a daytime to nighttime departure from HND.

I haven’t cancelled the flights at this stage as I am hoping to transfer to J SYD HND SYD flights for April/May next year. I have rebooked travelling to Europe via SIN and the UAE and sadly, in Economy.

I can’t see the Japanese government opening to individual tourists until later in the year, there is no indication when the airside hotel will reopen and we now need to apply for a tourist visa to enter.

I was doing a search for a friend and did notice some great return fares from LHR with JL in March/April -$2500 in PE and $4500 in J.
