Brisbane Airport is set to host a pilot of new technology enabling automated departures for Australian and New Zealand travellers. If successful, the pilot will form the model for the rollout of automated technology to all Australian airports.

The pilot, according to Robyn Miller, national manager of passenger policy and practice at the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, follows a commitment within last year's budget that the agency would undertake a live trial of automated departure technology by the end of the 2013-14 financial year.

So far, Customs has completed a request for tender (RFT) for the technology, and has set up a panel to provide that technology. A request for quote (RFQ) on the technology to be used in the pilot will be issued in early December.

I've used SmartGate departures in New Zealand and love it. Here's hoping it spreads around the country very quickly.

I've also used the SmartGate departures in New Zealand. It was quick and painless. Bring it to MEL already...

Huzar!! Pleasing news - Agree that SmartGate Departing WLG was quite pleasing/quick! :)

When exactly is my question.... Won't be ready for my next INT trip over the ditch in Jan I assume :(

Starting mid next year... trial only.. BNE for 12 months...

I never thought i'd see AU behind NZ, but as others have said, and as i've experienced, it works brilliantly out of AKL and WLG for departures.

AU Customs need to catch up here. It works great inbound, NZ have a working model, why not take that for the trial and evolve it?

If it's anything like the introduction of Smart Gate here, it'll be 2-3 years before we see it in wide use for departures:(

I've consistently failed the smart gate test since a few months ago. Simply given up on it now.

Bne airport is the joke of au aviation, why on earth pilot it at a Micky mouse port is beyond me.

Failed for me at MEL until I worked out it was because I'm too tall for the camera, so now I squat slightly and it works fine! Worked fine for me both entering and exiting AKL without squatting though!
